ISDN problem with kernel 2.4.16

2002-01-06 Thread Jochen Kronjäger

Hi all,

after installing testing (woody) with kernel-image 2.4.16, isdn shows
strange behaviour (it still works perfectly with my old 2.2.17 kernel).

# isdnctrl dial ippp0
successfully connects to my ISP, accoring got the logs, and I can even
ping some remote server. Everything seems fine.

As soon as I try telnet, ssh, or Netscape, the connection is lost, see
the logs below.

The problem persists with kernel 2.4.17. I can't make any sense of the
error messages (I'm not even sure what the actual error message is ;-)
Anybody have a clue?

(Please CC: to me, as I'm not on the list)

Thanks!! Jochen

On my machine it was rwhod. Look into your logs. I removed rwhod and
friends and had no problems.

Look at /etc/isdn/device.ippp0 and search for DIALMODE.
This should be set to "manual" unless you know what you are doing.

first of all: thanks for your continuing help.

on my system a grep ISDN /boot/config-2.2.17 shows:

I also would like to use it as module.
I do not have any entry like this but I think this is the point I run
into problems with modconf. When I try to edit this file manually I also
get the same errors.

Anyway I will read all the documentation you provided to me and if I
still won't get it to run I will ask again, hopefully knowing a bit
better where the error could be located.

thanks again for your effort and your hint to useful documentation.

I do not know. Does the config file shows support for ISDN?
With my custom kernel:
[17:24:16 /tmp]$ grep ISDN /boot/config-2.2.17
# ISDN subsystem
CONFIG_ISDN=m
CONFIG_ISDN_PPP=y
CONFIG_ISDN_PPP_VJ=y
CONFIG_ISDN_MPP=y
CONFIG_ISDN_AUDIO=y
CONFIG_ISDN_TTY_FAX=y
# ISDN feature submodules
# CONFIG_ISDN_DRV_LOOP is not set
# CONFIG_ISDN_DIVERSION is not set
# Passive ISDN cards
CONFIG_ISDN_DRV_HISAX=m
# Active ISDN cards
# CONFIG_ISDN_DRV_ICN is not set
# CONFIG_ISDN_DRV_PCBIT is not set
# CONFIG_ISDN_DRV_SC is not set
# CONFIG_ISDN_DRV_ACT2000 is not set
# CONFIG_ISDN_DRV_EICON is not set
# CONFIG_ISDN_DRV_AVMB1 is not set
[17:27:30 /tmp]$

Since I am using the ISDN sub system as modules, I am also using the following:

[17:29:09 /tmp]$ tail -7 /etc/modutils/aliases
alias char-major-43 hisax
alias char-major-44 hisax
alias char-major-45 hisax
options hisax type=27
alias ippp0 isdn

[17:29:13 /tmp]$

Do not forget to run update-modutils if you are adding that.
You might want to read /usr/share/doc/isdnutils/ and
/usr/share/doc/kernel-doc-2.2.17/Documentation/isdn/. IIRC there is a lilo add
on in case the ISDN sub system is complied into the kernel.

I did not compile a new kernel at all. I used the CD-Distribution from
Linuxland. The Debian Linux Guide refers to this (and it is distributed
with the CD-Set) so it should not be necessary to compile a kernel,
should it?

it is a book but in the editorial there is mentioned that it is the
printed version of an online document (no URL was given).

The ISBN is 3-00-006063-4. You can find a description of this book on

online-document the book is derived.

Did you compile the kernel with the appropriate support? Are you passing it
the appropriate params (or giving the module the params it need)?

You might want to look at /usr/share/doc/kernel-doc-2.2.17/Documentation/isdn
and /usr/share/doc/isdnutils.

BTW: You mentioned `the chapter in the debian linux guide'. Can you give me a
pointer to this doc? I could not find it in the online version of the tdlug
package.

installed (pci slots are a bit hard to press a card into, sometimes),
and also check with lspci that the kernel actually recognizes the card

Is there anything i can do to stop this??
 (enabling routed doesn't help)

PS: I'm running hamm 2.0 beta from "Heiko Schlittermann" CD-set.
I updated this system and installed from scratch two other PC's
without any trouble using the multicd-install method.
Great Work, many thanks to all the Developers!!!
