Thanks a lot for your help, Ralph.

I reinstalled xfce and all is well. I had to repartition the system
because removing gnome was not completed well and made the system buggy.

But all is well now in a system hardware very much like yours.

First, iceweasel:
Perhaps what works very well for me, may be of help. On my jessie
(upgraded from wheezy) old core2 duo laptop with 2G ram, iceweasel runs
quite nicely with the noscript addon. 2 instances/profiles of iceweasel
are up, one with 7 open tabs at the moment. So first I'd suggest you
run iceweasel without addons to check performance. You could try
chromium browser which also runs fine for me.

Next, wireless:
xfce is also my DE. For wireless, I use network-manager. wicd is not
installed. Your log shows wireless is up and you have network-manager:
 Jun 2 08:36:53 spree60e NetworkManager[526]: info Activation (wlan0)
 successful, device activated.

Right click the nm-applet in your xfce4 desktop notification area for
settings. Don't see it? Run ~$ nm-appletNot found?
Install network-manager-gnome.

Or use nmcli. man nmcli for help.

Good luck and have fun!

Could you please not send .doc files as they require a special program
to read them. plain text is preferred then anyone can read it.

e.g. I'm not gonna install a program just to read a .doc file, I'm
guessing I'm not the only one.

Are you sure it is Iceweasel that causes the freeze? Does it happen at
completely random times, or when you do something specific?

If it's random, you should try running memtest overnight.
