Problems installing xfree86 4.3 from experimental

2003-10-21 Thread Alexander Barinov
Hi!

I'm trying to install debian/unstable on my laptop and I badly need
xfree86 4.3 there. I use aptitude for package management.

So that's what I did:

1. Added
  deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian ../project/experimental main
to my sources.list

2. Updated package lists using 'u' key in aptitude.

But aptitude still shows me that I can't upgrade xfree86 packages
because available version is 4.2-12

What am I doing wrong?

IIRC, experimental packages will not show up in the package archive.
You either need to pin them their in your conifguration, or specify
them on the command=line line, like so:
apt-get install x-windows-system/experimental

I am not sure if that is exactly right, but play with the syntax and it
should get you what you need.

deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian ../project/experimental main contrib
non-free

Try that added to you sources.list. Then aptitude update. Then run
aptitude in interactive mode and select the version you want. Be careful
You want tp make sure you install ALL the same versions of those you
select.

Currently here is my list of experimental XFree86:

lbxproxy libdps1 libxaw7 proxymngr twm x-window-system
x-window-system-core xbase-clients xdm xfonts-100dpi xfonts-75dpi

xlibmesa-gl xlibmesa-glu xlibs xlibs-data xlibs-dev xnest xprt
xserver-common xserver-xfree86 xspecs xterm xutils xvfb

Installing XFree86 v3.3.6 instead of v4.0

2003-07-27 Thread Barnaby Waters
I installed debian-30r1 on a fairly old PC with a S3Trio64V2/GX video chip.

X applications wil not run. I think that XFree86 version v4.0 no longer not
support the S£Trio64V2/GX chip and I need to install XFree86 v3.3.6.

Can I install XFree86 v3.3.6 during the initial installaion process?

If not, how do I remove XFree86 v4.0 using apt-get after installation?
Which dependant packages do I also need to remove?
How do I install XFree86 v3.3.6 using apt-get?
What other packages should I install with it?
Sorry for all the questions.

Thanks, Barnaby

That is correct for XFree 4.0 and 4.1, the newest version of XFree (4.3)
has again support for these cards (but is not included in 3.0).

Can I install XFree86 v3.3.6 during the initial installaion process?

The initial installation process doesn't install any X-Server. You
normally install that one after the basic installation. When the basic
installation is finished, you are offered to start tasksel and dselect.
You can install the correct X-server by selecting the right
xserver-*-Package.

If not, how do I remove XFree86 v4.0 using apt-get after installation?

I think you need to install the package xserver-s3 for your card. Then
you can remove xserver-xfree86 to deinstall XFree 4.1. As far as I know
you don't need to remove anything else, both packages have the same
dependencies.

Confusing problem installing XFree86 4.1.0

2001-11-12 Thread Jason Machacek
I downloaded the XFree86 4.1.0 installation packages provided at:
http://people.debian.org/~cpbotha/xf410_potato/i386/
and burned them to CD.(My Winmodem doesn't work in Linux; I have a new modem
arriving soon) I ran apt-cdrom and added that CD to the sources, then ran
apt-get dist-upgrade x-window-system. The installer added the new files.
When it was finished, I ran apt-get dist-upgrade again to see if I would get
any error messages, and it said that the following packages had been kept
back, but gave no reason for it:

twm xbase-clients xdm xmh xnest xserver-common xterm

I tried apt-get dist-upgrade --ignore-hold but I got the same result.
(Also, I had killed all X-related processes before running apt-get
dist-upgrade each time)

X runs fine, but I'm not sure the 4.1.0 installation was complete because I
downloaded it so X could support my Radeon card, but neither XF86Setup nor
xf86config have entries for the Radeon card or chipset.

Is my installation incomplete, or does something different have to be done
to get the Radeon card to function under Linux?

Thanks,
Jason Machacek

Installing XFree86

2001-11-03 Thread John Purser
Hello,

I've got a basic Debian Woody installation on a Pentium III 550 with 196

the packages available with names like x-window-system and

None of it seems to match the documentation from www.xfree86.org and I

Would someone either post a summary of the steps involved or point me to a

You might want to give 'tasksel' a try... if you go to the very bottom of the
list it gives you the option to install the entire X window system. I believe
that's what I used to install it on a basic Woody system like yours (I
installed a basic potato and then upgraded that to Woody).

xserver-common
xserver-xfree86
xfonts-base
xfonts-75dpi
xfonts-100dpi
xlibs
xlib6g
xterm

and some optional:
some window manager (afterstep,fvwm,)
xviddetect
xutils

...and maybe some others i forgot but if you will use dselect all dependencies

This falls under bad habit. But whenever I have to install something big e.g. KDE I install a

program that requires it and let dselect resolve the dependencies.

I havn't used Gnome for a long time however I can point you to the right
place.

Just do a search for gnome and you will get a list of all of the gnome
packages a well as any other official package.

Many thanks! It was pretty easy thanks you your instructions.

Two new questions. I want to install Gnome as the window manager (I think
that terminology is right) and KDE for the libraries. Again, there are
several packages that might be the right one. Do you know which one to
install and more importantly where do I go to find this stuff out without
 yelling to the list?

 Thanks again,

 It's pretty easy actually!

IIRC, there are two packages, (x-window-system-core xserver-xfree86)
other
than deciding which Window Manager you will be running...

 Just run:

 apt-get install x-window-system-core xserver-xfree86

The packages will essentially set themselves up after a few configuration
 questions you have to answer.

Then just install the WM packages of you choice.

So far the only instructions that look like they might work has been to just
install everything that mentions Gnome in the package list. Doesn't seem

Hi,

I've tried installing the xlibs-4.0.3-3.deb and associated packages yesterday
and I've got three related questions:

* How can I have dselect install them without complaining about conflicts xlib6g
and suggesting to remove all the software that depends on it (virtually
everything on my machine as you can guess) ? Do I need to update to a version of
the debian utilities which handles these things better ?

* my video card is a VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage LT
Pro AGP-133 (rev dc) according to lspci and I am not sure the corresponding
driver was part of the XFree86 distributions lately. Does the xlibs-4.0.3-3.deb
support it ?

* The XFree86 distribution indicates a number of precautions to take when
changing version (among which there is the fact that it is highly preferable to
avoid having a running X server when doing it). Are there any similar
precautions I should take when installing xlibs-4.0.3-3.deb ?

Thanks a lot, you guys are doing a great job !

Shan

Using the wrong tool. To install debian packages, just use

dpkg -i filenames...

e.g. dpkg -i /floppy/*DEB

Dselect is an automated tool that requires knowledge in the
 --
form of Packages files - descriptions of packages and location
of their files. You've done that bit yourself already by
putting your selected packages onto a floppy.

Installing XFree86 3.3.6

2001-02-03 Thread Keith Cecile Schooley
I installed a new set of Debian CDs recently, only to have anXious not

that XFree86 3.3.6 should support the SiS 5597/5598 card, so I downloaded
the files from them. Then, on trying to install, I received a message
saying that my system appears to use an a.out binary system, which is not
supported by this release of XFree86. On the XFree86 website, I am told
that Elf is the only binary type supported for Linux OSs.

All this stuff is new to me. How can I deal with this problem?

We have a Diamond Viper V770-Ultra (TNT2 Chipset) running succesfully here.

Get the SVGA Xserver from the Nvidia website:

http://www.nvidia.com

Then follow the following links: drivers, Linux, pick an FTP site, or read
the FAQ.

I got the following file from their ftp site:

RIVA-X-GLX-1.0-glibc-i386.tar.gz

That tarball contains a replacement for the SVGA server. It works in Slink.
It has glx support in it, and also support for VMware.

This setup works very well, we have run Quake II (with glx acceleration),
and Quake III arena-test.

Your other option is to update to one of the latest X-Free versions. Nvidia
helped with the drivers, and I think that the TNT2 is supported as of Xfree
3.3.4 .

1. I already took one xfree86 v3.3 from a ftp site and installed it when i
ran startx i got an error message as follows /usr/X11R6/bin/startx: line
66: 157 segmentation fault xinit $clientargs -- $serverargs

Hence i get a feeling that i am loading a wrong binary of xfree86 ( ie i
dont know if i have to take a.out binary or whatever ).

Can you please advise what binaries to take and from where so that i can
have xfree86 running in my machine. My machine is a 586 machine.
Please advise.

Thanks

Where did you find the binaries?

Was it the official debianpackages from ftp.debian.org (or a mirror
thereoff), or was it a package from Xfree86 themself ftp.xfree86.og
(?) (or a mirror)
