Re: K Desktop Environment

Hi. I have tried the latest KDE .deb packages there and have found that
the kfm file manager locks up and core-dumps on a regular basis. I have
had more luck compiling from scratch, but currently I can't get kpanel to
compile because I seem to be missing something called 'msgfmt'.
Apparently my friends who have openwindows have it, but I haven't been
able to locate it in Debian.

Finally, KDE is impressive, but I think before I switch from my current
WM to KDE for good, I would like to see them slim it down and make it
run faster. Right now, even with 32M, I really notice that it is taking
a big chunk out of my memory, and when I have other fat apps like Netscape
Communicator going at the same time, the whole system really suffers.

If you still need msgfmt, install the xview-dev package. Apart from the
usual libc5 and X packages xview-dev also needs the main xview package.
The xview packages are in the X11 section.

The debian package is fairly old. I strongly recommend you to download
the actual tar.gz source distribution. I've used KDE on S.u.S.E. 5.0 and
RedHat 4.2. It can be compiled without problems and is very usable even
for an alpha release.

A german version of debian, JF Lehmanns debian gnu/linux, also contains
KDE. So it should work with debian as well. Please note that you also
need the Qt Library.

Regards

Marc

Ahh. Thanks! That was a bit obscure. I did manage to get a copy from
someone else, but I'd prefer to have the Debian version.

I have another question about KDE:

So far I have been unsuccessful at building a KDE which has a working
kpanel. Am I missing something? kpanel seems to chew up all available
memory and I end up having to kill it off. I'm wondering if this is
something peculiar to Debian, or whether it's just because kpanel is
currently in an unstable state. I have tried two different distributions
since the end of August to no avail.

I tried using it for a while instead of fvwm. It still deserves its
`alpha' designation, in my opinion. It has a tendency to hang at times.
The kdehelp browser can't cope with relative links.

No doubt such things will be improved in due course.

It is a pleasant environment, but not yet very stable. I'm not sure
what it has got that should make me change permanently from fvwm.

Yes ... I use it all the time... it's kinda sorta stable (ok I'll
explain) it's prety much stable ... I have about one or two seg faults /
lockups a week ... however when it locks it locks so well you have to
flip the power swich ... It also has a problem ... Kpanel will core dump
when you exit it... Kfm is good if not a little slow on my 486x66 ... I
like it Very flexable ...

Yes ... although development seems to have slowed down somewhat ...
