Re: Keyboard Prob
It looks like SI 3410 KS As far as the keyboard is concerned, I've never counted the keys, but for a lark, we ocutned them and I have 107 keys), now my keyboard is set up using 101 keys. Should I go into mc and edited it? Don't even know what ones I should include really. It's basically a UK keyboard with Sleep and Awake and another extra key. Post back with that and I'll try to look up what kind of controller it is. Even if that chip is made by Rockwell, it could still be a winmodem, so don't just list the manufacturer, include any numbers found there as well. Other info that may be found on the modem Also, use the dmesg command to see what hardware the kernel is detecting. Look for something that looks like this: ttyS00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A ttyS01 at 0x02f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A to see if the kernel is detecting the serial ports. If the kernel is not detecting the serial ports, then either the serial driver is not being loaded (if it is a module) or the serial ports may be disabled in the bios, but this is unlikely. If the modem is a pci device, it should show up in the output of the lspci command. -- Paul T Wright <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> And, strange to tell, among the Earthen Lot Some could articulate, while others not: And suddenly one more impatient cried -- "Who is the Potter, pray, and who the Pot?" -- The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam --

Do a search for "linmodem" and see if you modem is usable. I came late to this thread, so forgive me for jumping in. -- Gary Dolan Debian GNU/Linux 2.2, kernel 2.4.6 FreeBSD 4.3

Serial numbers don't really matter. What you want is to write down the part numbers on all the chips (ie big black things, not other little components). Send them to the list. Someone here is bound to recognize the manufacturer's abbreviation at the beginning of the number and know where to look to find a data sheet on the part. For example TI is Texas Instruments and NS could be National Semiconductor. Also try using minicom. It won't get you on the internet, but it can tell you if the modem works or not. -D

It's not generally easy to say, but if there are less than 20 non-chip components on it, it's probably a winmodem. Many real modems have a chip on them marked "rockwell". Cheers, Joost

It won't work, get a real modem instead. These winmodems are a crock. Intel loves them, because you need a fast processor. It saves the modem manufacturer a few cents on component costs, and requires you to spend considerably more money on a faster processor. You lose. Okay. My keyboard just pooped out in tty2 so I have no idea if my configurations are okay , plus I also notcied upon bebooting that it does not have "any ports found", now I wonder what this is? Is this why it could not find the modem?
