Re: Lexmark is less than helpful :
My lexmark Optra e310 has native postscript support and emulates pcl6. $350. I shopped and bought it for exactly that reason. Works fine on NT also. It seems rather normal to check if desired hardware works on your system before buying. there is also a compatability database at suse.com to prevent future disasters. Lexmark is less than helpful :
This is a reply I received in response to a request for Linux drivers for the Colour Inkjet 3200 printer from Lexmark. I guess I should have checked printer compatibility a bit better before I bought it : ( In reference to your e-mail of 25/05/99, unfortunatly at present we do not have the drivers to work with Linux and have no plans to introduce it in the near future. If there is any move to introduce a range of drivers for Linux, we will inform all customers. If any othrer problems arise with your printer you can contact our technical support line on 01812801701, Monday to Friday 9am to 5.30 pm. Best regards, I especially like the 'Best regards,' bit. Rather Ironic, I think. On a related note, does any one have any experience with attempting to get this printer to work from Linux? I'd have thought that 'a printer was a printer, was a printer' But apparently not. I am not a programmer/hacker type, just an ex-Windows user who is trying to move to something better. I have WindowsNT on a 2G partition, while I learn the ropes of Linux. I hope to re-format that partition within the year, though. I don't want to see what happens with WindowsNT come Y2K. Thanks again for all your help in the past, and all the help I'm sure you will continue to provide in the future. Cheers, John Gay

I'd have thought that 'a printer was a printer, was a printer' In theory, they should be... sadly, a lot of hardware these days is being tampered with to make it work with specific operating systems... no prizes for guessing which ones. First modems, then cablemodems, now printers... Anyway, there is a project to produce drivers for such printers, but I'm not sure whether they've addressed this particular one yet. The only relevant mention I can find wasn't successful, sadly. http://www.linuxhardware.net/cgi-bin/view.cgi?1999-05-22_20:22:37 Vin
Re: Lexmark is less than helpful :
John: Check the printer manual to see whether your printer emulates any of the HP Laserjet models (or, even better, Postscript-- but this isn't likely). If it does, you can set up filters (using ghostscript, most likely) to print anything you want. I don't know the details about your specific printer, but my experience has been that most printers provide some level of HP emulation. Re: Lexmark is less than helpful :
I had the same conversation with Lexmark about a year ago. However, I recall reading a post in this list re: someone who had hacked a driver. My solution was to give the printer to my kids (win-machine) and buy a Canon BJC-610 - that I found was compatible via the supported hardware page. Let the buyer beware. I had a conversation with a dealer, and he assured me that Lexmark supports Linux... I repeat, Let the buyer beware :~{ - Original Message - From: John Gay [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: debian-user@lists.debian.org Sent: Friday, May 28, 1999 9:27 AM Subject: Lexmark is less than helpful : This is a reply I received in response to a request for Linux drivers for the Colour Inkjet 3200 printer from Lexmark. Re: Lexmark is less than helpful : -
I just found the link, it is: http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/pht/printer_list.cgi?make=Lexmark This will give you a list of ALL Lexmark printers. The 1000 is listed as 'paperweight' i.e. does NOT work with Linux : ( a number of other Lexmark printer do work, though. Like I said, the best thing is to use this list BEFORE buying a printer, not after, like I did. But, with the support Linux has been getting from all corners lately, I feel it will only be a matter of time before Lexmark and others start to fall in line. What ever happened to 'The customer is ALWAYS Right'? I let Lexmark know I was looking for Linux drivers for their printer, if enough of their other customer also start looking for Linux drivers, they may change their mind about supporting Linux. *WARNING This must NOT turn into an ugly battle. HATE Mail is always forwarded to /dev/null. legitimate requests from customers, though are never ignored for long. I believe there is a HOW-TO for Linux Advocacy which would be good reading before firing off loads of requests for drivers. Myself, when I find a device that isn't supported, I send a simple request for Linux drivers, and hope that others will do the same. That's my 1.575302 Euros worth. Cheers, John Gay

An effective (although not completely honest :) ) way to do it is: Instead of saying: I just bought your printer -- do you have linux drivers Say: I'm thinking about buying your printer -- do you have linux drivers? -Michael On Fri, 28 May 1999, John Gay wrote: I just found the link, it is: http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/pht/printer_list.cgi?make=Lexmark This will give you a list of ALL Lexmark printers. That was pretty much the response I got from Lexmark on my oldgiven-to-me-free WinWriter; of course by the name of it I knew it was winhardware (aka garbage), but I hoped that Lexmark might have been a little more helpful. I for one will recommend against any Lexmark purchases when asked by my friends/family/etc.
