Use the ircclient to end all ircclient discussions: irssi. It is highly
configurable, secure, compact and not to forget: perl scriptable :)
I too used to use BitchX and Epic until I discovered irssi. Irssi sweep
the floor with both those (twice on Sundays). 

apt-get install irrsi-text

you might want to take a look at irssi.org.
