Out of frustration over XCFE I installed KDE and now XFCE mounts the 
USB-sticks without any changes to

XFCE.
To be sure, however, I installed thunar-volman; you never know.

I am running Debian Lenny 5.0 amd64  since a couple of days.
USB-sticks are recognized (according to the log) but they are not 
mounted automatically nor are the mountable.

What do I have to do?

It depends. I use xfce4, I installed thunar-volman and then added my
user name to group plugdev. Everything goes well.

Have you tried mounting with root permissions (i.e., as root)? If that
is successful, try adding your non-root user to group 'plugin'.

FYI - You probably are aware of this already, but this is a topic that
has been talked about to death over the years. A quick google brings
up many, many hits on the subject.
