If you want to have a stable system that stays 'stable' change etch to stable above, do apt-get update, then apt-get dist-upgrade the system. No, as has been stated many times already, including in the post which you replied to but removed (why?), it is preferable to use the release code names. -- Chris. == I contend that we are both atheists. My confusion about lenny and sid
It may be silly question. I suddenly noticed my /etc/debian_version. It contains sid/lenny. As I know that lenny is stable and sid is unstable . So my distributiion is stable or testing??? -- Wishing you the very best of everything, always!!! Kousik Maiti Registered Linux User #474025

Re: My confusion about lenny and sid
I run the command : #apt-show-versions It shows that all packages are stable and either uptodate or upgradeable . So can I assume that my OS is stable one??? Kousik Maiti: It may be silly question. I suddenly noticed my /etc/debian_version. It contains sid/lenny. When did you do the last upgrade? What's in your sources.list? I have 5.0 on a lenny system and squeeze/sid on sid. The file belongs to the package base-files. Which version of base-files do you have installed (apt-cache-policy base-files)? As I know that lenny is stable and sid is unstable . So my distributiion is stable or testing??? /etc/debian_version can only give you a rough idea about that. It is mostly meant for scripts. Slight problem there, where the reference of etch is correctly pointing to etch, the reference to 'stable' is now lenny, so it's a mixed system with old stable and stable. I would recommend always using the release code names in sources.list to avoid problem like this in the future.
