Re: Netscape Installation, how?
As you may have noticed from the various replies, there's two ways to install Netscape with dpkg. If you're using slink, Kent West posted the default method: On Tue, Feb 22, 2000 at 09:27:27AM -0600, Kent West wrote: > > Because of licensing issues, Debian doesn't have the Netscape binary; > it does have a .deb installer that will install the Netscape binary > and register it with dpkg, etc. > > You will need to download the Netscape binary yourself, from > [www|ftp].netscape.com; I've always had more success with ftp. In potato and woody (and backported to slink), changes in the Netscape licensing allow inclusion in non-free. For potato and woody, it's simply a matter of apt-get installing the "communicator" or "navigator" packages (these will pull all required dependancies). For slink, you'll want the apt sources John Miskinis suggested: On Tue, Feb 22, 2000 at 07:58:27AM -0800, John Miskinis wrote: > > I have only installed netscape 4.5 , on slink, and never had > to download it by hand. Hi, I have only installed netscape 4.5 , on slink, and never had to download it by hand. I used apt-get as follows: apt-get install communicator-smotif-45 apt-get install netscape-java-45 You will only need the second package if you wish to run java. re: Netscape Installation Problem "segmentation fault
I got binary distribution of Netscape Communicator 4.61 version for Linux 2.0, export encription standard from ftp.netscape.com. I installed it on my Debian 2.1 system. Everything seemed to be fine with installation until I tried to run "./netscape". The first problem I got was that netscape "can't load lib "libXt.so.6", so I set the path variable LD_LIBRARY_PATH =/usr/X11R6/lib (that is where libXt.s0.6 file is located). Then libXt.so.6 loading is fine but netscape could not find some lib files such as "libm.so.5". So I reinstalled debian libc5 run-time library module and copied them to /usr/X11R6/lib. Then the lib loading is fine. I ran ./netscape again. then comes the another problem saying "28923 segmentation fault ./netscape". I tried to solve it but could not go any further. Could someone help me on this problem and what I can do to fix it. Thank you Hi, Daniel, i had the same problems, but V4.7 from a CD that came with a magazine. So i went to the netscape homepage and downloaded the glibc Version. That worked! Alf

I think you've probably forgotten to install certain X library packages, before installing Netscape. I use dselect to install Netscape, so it reminds me "required" packages nicely. Hope this gives you hints to solve your problem. If you have problem using dselect, ask again. :) By the way, it would be greatly helpful if next time you can give the problem more details. The description of netscape3 in the Packages file does state how and where to get the netscape tar file, but the description for netscape4 doesn't. From netscape3: Netscape Communications Corporation does not allow redistribution of their software. Therefore, this package requires the user to fetch the netscape archive separately and place it in the directory pointed to by the TMPDIR environment variable (or /tmp if TMPDIR not defined) before attempting to install this package. Dave, why can't you just rename that file to it's _original_ name when it's already on your Debian box? Something like mv netscape-v301-export.x86-unknow. \ /tmp/netscape-v301-export.x86-unknown-linux-elf.tar.gz Alex Y. > > Thanks, > Dave Neuer -- _ _( )_ ( (o___ +---+ | _ 7 |Alexander Yukhimets| \(")| http://pages.nyu.edu/~aqy6633/ | / \ \ +---+ -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Netscape installation problems
Hi I am trying to install Netscape 3.01 on my Debian system. The machine running debian has no connection to the Internet, so to transfer files to the Debian box, I have to first download them onto my PowerMac, and then transfer them over my local network. The mac doesn't like the name "netscape-v301-export.x86-unknown-linux-elf.tar.gz", and so truncates it to "netscape-v301-export.x86-unknow." I transfered the file to the Linux box, and then attempted to run the Debian netscape installer, and got the following message: ERROR: The Netscape archive must be in /tmp under the name: /tmp/netscape-v301-export.x86-unknown-linux-elf.tar.[gz|Z] Do NOT simply rename the archive of another version in order to force it to install with this package. It will not work. Archive files can be found on ftp.netscape.com. dpkg: error processing netscape (--install): subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1 Errors were encountered while processing: netscape How can I get around this, short of setting up a modem on the PC, or running a DHCP program (like VirtualSurfer, which is a $150 piece of commercial software) on the Mac? Hint: I'm looking for someone who can give me detailed instructions on editing netscape_3.01_1.1.deb's preinstallation script so that however it's checking that the name's been changed is suppressed (since the name is the ONLY part of the original archive that has been changed). Thanks, Dave Neuer -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Trouble? e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] .
