As you may have noticed from the various replies, there's two ways to
install Netscape with dpkg. If you're using slink, Kent West posted the
default method:

In potato and woody (and backported to slink), changes in the Netscape
licensing allow inclusion in non-free. For potato and woody, it's simply
a matter of apt-get installing the "communicator" or "navigator"
packages (these will pull all required dependancies). For slink, you'll
want the apt sources John Miskinis suggested:

Hi,

I have only installed netscape 4.5 , on slink, and never had
to download it by hand. I used apt-get as follows:

  apt-get install communicator-smotif-45
  apt-get install netscape-java-45

You will only need the second package if you wish to run java.

My sources.list in case I have something special in it is:

deb http://www.debian.org/~vincent/ slink-update main
deb http://www.debian.org/~vincent/ xfree-update main
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free

Because of licensing issues, Debian doesn't have the Netscape binary; it does
have a
.deb installer that will install the Netscape binary and register it with dpkg,
etc.

You will need to download the Netscape binary yourself, from
[www|ftp].netscape.com;
I've always had more success with ftp. You'll have to drill down through the
directories (pub, then ...english...etc, etc...) to the correct file (something
like
"communicator-4.7-linux-glibc-tar-can-this-filename-be-any-longer-tar.gz") and
download it (don't forget to "bin" before "get"). Put this file in the /tmp
directory, then either do an "apt-get install netscape4" or dselect the
netscape4
package.

Voila! U R done.

Please note that there are several differnet versions of Netscape for Linux.
In particular, there's a libc5-based version and a libc6-based version.

libm.so.5 is from libc5, not libc6. Install the following Debian packages:

  libc5
  libg++27
  xlib6
  xpm4.7

Right, glibc2 is libc6.

I got binary distribution of Netscape Communicator 4.61 version for Linux 2.0,
export encription standard from ftp.netscape.com.
I installed it on my Debian 2.1 system. Everything seemed to be fine with
installation until I tried to run "./netscape".
The first problem I got was that netscape "can't load lib "libXt.so.6", so I set
the path variable LD_LIBRARY_PATH =/usr/X11R6/lib (that is where libXt.s0.6 file
is located). Then libXt.so.6 loading is fine but netscape could not find some
lib files such as "libm.so.5". So I reinstalled debian libc5 run-time library
module and copied them to /usr/X11R6/lib. Then the lib loading is fine.
I ran ./netscape again. then comes the another problem saying "28923
segmentation fault ./netscape". I tried to solve it but could not go any
further.
Could someone help me on this problem and what I can do to fix it.
Thank you

Hi, Daniel,

i had the same problems, but V4.7 from a CD that came with a magazine.

So i went to the netscape homepage and downloaded the glibc Version.
That worked!

Correct first time. I read that somebody set the symlink on libXt.so.6 to old
libc5 library to get Netscape to work, so this makes sense - to me!

BTW I also had to install libc5 compatible libraries for xpm4.7_3.4j-0.6 and
libg++27_2.7.2.1-14.4.

Thanks!

Hi Greg,
You didn't mention WHICH two packages you installed. There are more than
two with the word 'netscape' in them.

This worked for me:
# apt-get install communicator-smotif-45

If that doesn't work you'll need to add lines to your
/etc/apt/sources.list so apt can find the packages if needs be.

Don't forget that netscape 4.7 was released a while ago so perhaps 4.5
isn't the version you want to be installing.

To run it, just type 'netscape' at the command prompt while in X.

I think you've probably forgotten to install
certain X library packages, before installing
Netscape. I use dselect to install Netscape,
so it reminds me "required" packages nicely.
Hope this gives you hints to solve your

ask again. :)

By the way, it would be greatly helpful if

The description of netscape3 in the Packages file does state how
and where to get the netscape tar file, but the description for
netscape4 doesn't. From netscape3:

Netscape Communications Corporation does not allow redistribution of
their software. Therefore, this package requires the user to fetch
the netscape archive separately and place it in the directory pointed
to by the TMPDIR environment variable (or /tmp if TMPDIR not defined)
before attempting to install this package. You can get the linux

  netscape-v301-export.x86-unknown-linux-elf.tar.gz

You need to get the file netscape-v301-export.x86-unknown-linux-elf.tar.gz
from netscape. you will need to work you way through the download site. do
*not* get v302, v304, etc. It is in the archive section, i believe, rather
than the current sections.

Then move this file to /tmp, and

  dpkg --configure netscape

and it will install the netscape package.

Basically you need to download the netscape tar. Do this to see the
instructions
dpkg --purge netscape (or is it netscape3?)
   dpkg -i netscape*
In the directory with the netscape.deb. You will have to get
  netscape-v301-export.x86-unknown-linux-elf.tar.gz (2.2M)
from ftp.netscape.com (/pub/netscape/english/unix/linux20/?)

netscape installation

1997-11-23 Thread me
Hello,
Being "brandnew" to Debian, I am having lots of trouble getting
netscape3.01.
I first tried under dselect and got a error (1?), then tried ftp to both
debian (contrib) and netscape. I can't find it anywhere. I then went back
to dselect and started from the top of the menu and followed each step. It
showed netscape as under "broken-contribution" (if memory serves me
right).
What can I try next, or what have I missed?
Thanks for your help.

Whatever the filename is when your PowerMac has downloaded it, copy it
into the '/tmp' directory on your Debian machine, and then rename that
file to the appropriate name as indicated above... i.e.

mv /tmp/netscape-v301-export-x86-unknow /tmp/netscape-v301-export-x86-unknown-li
nux-elf-tar.gz

And then re-install the netscape package.

Um, rename the archive to what it's expecting. The warning is to make
sure you don't try to install a DIFFERENT VERSION of Netscape with this
installer package. Correcting a mangled filename can't change anything.

Dave,

why can't you just rename that file to it's _original_ name when it's
already on your Debian box?

Something like

mv netscape-v301-export.x86-unknow. \
/tmp/netscape-v301-export.x86-unknown-linux-elf.tar.gz

Netscape installation problems

1997-09-01 Thread Dave Neuer
Hi

I am trying to install Netscape 3.01 on my Debian system. The machine
running debian has no connection to the Internet, so to transfer files
to the Debian box, I have to first download them onto my PowerMac, and
then transfer them over my local network. The mac doesn't like the name
"netscape-v301-export.x86-unknown-linux-elf.tar.gz", and so truncates it
to "netscape-v301-export.x86-unknow." I transfered the file to the
Linux box, and then attempted to run the Debian netscape installer, and
got the following message:

ERROR: The Netscape archive must be in /tmp under the name:
   /tmp/netscape-v301-export.x86-unknown-linux-elf.tar.[gz|Z]

Do NOT simply rename the archive of another version in order to
force it to install with this package. It will not work.

Archive files can be found on ftp.netscape.com.

dpkg: error processing netscape (--install):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 netscape

How can I get around this, short of setting up a modem on the PC, or
running a DHCP program (like VirtualSurfer, which is a $150 piece of
commercial software) on the Mac?

Hint: I'm looking for someone who can give me detailed instructions on
editing netscape_3.01_1.1.deb's preinstallation script so that however
it's checking that the name's been changed is suppressed (since the name
is the ONLY part of the original archive that has been changed).

Thanks,
Dave Neuer
