Thanks group for the great answers on the Linux vs Win98 question for
calculation speeds.

One thing puzzles me though -- the fastest platform listed for the algorithm
work unit (175 billion calculations) is an Alpha/Windows combination -7hr 20
min!
( vs Intel/Linux -18 hr;  vs Sparc/Solaris -15 hr;  and last of course, is
Pentium/Windows - 30 hr 49 min )

Any comments about the DEC Alpha  vs the UltraSparc?   And also discovered
that Solaris supports 64 bit processors, whereas Linux doesn't?

Linux does support 64-bit processors.  Both alphas and ultra-sparcs.

That's probably NT4, not win 98. and the Alpha may be just so much
faster than that poor old 386. Think of what would happen were Linux
running on a PII 266 instead of a 386/33!
