Thanks group for the great answers on the Linux vs Win98 question for calculation speeds. One thing puzzles me though -- the fastest platform listed for the algorithm work unit (175 billion calculations) is an Alpha/Windows combination -7hr 20 min! ( vs Intel/Linux -18 hr; vs Sparc/Solaris -15 hr; and last of course, is Pentium/Windows - 30 hr 49 min ) Any comments about the DEC Alpha vs the UltraSparc? And also discovered that Solaris supports 64 bit processors, whereas Linux doesn't? Arthur

Think of what would happen were Linux running on a PII 266 instead of a 386/33! Koyote
