Hi. Thank you for the help. Just like that, here is the DRI section missing from
my previous message.

Section "DRI"
Mode0666
EndSection

No, it's saying that DRI is disabled

Do you know Armagetron? Does it work nice in your config?
And the screen saver you've been talking about, maybe its buggy? Do other
screen savers using GL work nice?
Good luck whatever you try now. I don't think I can help you out. I hope

There are two AGPGART modules to be loaded (in /etc/modules). One is for the
specific motherboard that you have, the second is for the AGPGART module
itself. And you have to load the driver for the radeon card.

This my /etc/modules contains

agpgart
sis-agp
radeon

I think you error is because you are missing the motherboard agpgart module.

So, it looks like DRI is not around, at least for OpenGL.

> I don't know what to do? Is my kernel too old?
I don't think so (I assume that someone would have told you so already).

You could check if the Xserver tries to load the direct rendering:
  % cat /etc/X11/XF86Config | grep -i dri
What does this return on your machine?

It is necessary that this file (XF86Config) contains something like:
  Load "dri"
If it doesn't, then you ought to add it in /etc/X11/XF86Config
Section "Module" of this file will then look like this:

  Section "Module"
  # This loads the DBE extension module.
  Load"dbe" # Double buffer extension
  # This loads the miscellaneous extensions module, and disables
  # initialisation of the XFree86-DGA extension within that module.
  SubSection "extmod"
Option"omit xfree86-dga" # don't initialise the DGA extension
  EndSubSection
  # This loads the Type1 and FreeType font modules
  Load"type1"
  Load"freetype"
  # This loads the GLX module
  Load "glx"
Load "dri"<=== somewhere in section "Module"
  EndSection

If adding this line doesn't help or if it was present already in XF86Config,
then... you could have a look at the latest X log file - I assume it
is /var/log/XFree86.0.log - and check for error messages related to DRI.
What does your log file say?

Cheers,
Sylvain.

My kernel is 2.4.26-1-386

When I type "insmod radeon", I get the following message : "Using

I don't know what to do? Is my kernel too old?

Check out the ATI Linux driver packages for Debian

It provides packages which automate the conversion, compilation and
setup of the ATI binary-only drivers in your Debian box (including
support for 2.6.x kernels in case you are running them).

Right now the problem is in yor AGP kernel modules, maybe they aren't
loaded or your chipset isn't supported.

Oops, i've missed it's a Radeon Mobility, anyway if the module
"intel_agp" is loaded every time (as it should be) probably something
is broken, maybe a bug in the module itself or the card need some
initialization (i'm far from an expert, but the fact the card it's a
Mobility make me think that's not correctly supported). Try to look in
the Debian X dev mailing list, or in the kernel one if the problem
persist.

Hi,

Thank you for your quick reply.

# lsmod | grep agp
intel_agp 22752 1
agpgart34696 2 intel_agp

The Computer is an IBM Thinkpad T40p.

The only thing you don't specify is the motherboard chipset, you
probably need to modprobe your "agpgart" module, this one will depend
on the module for your MB chipset, if supported. =)

For example, here "apgart" depends on "via_agp"...

Hi,

I don't want to hijack or distract any answers to the problem of the

not: just ignore my post...)

If you're running Sarge or Sid you don't need the ATI binary drivers.
In your XF86Config-4 choose the "ati" driver, check if your "radeon"
kernel module is loaded before launching X (needed for the DRM/DRI
stuff) and, after starting X if the command "glxinfo" shows the line
"direct rendering: Yes" you're running 3D HW acceleration...

Not optimal display

2004-09-18 Thread Jean-Francois Lefebvre
Hi.

I'm using Debian since 2 weeks, and so far I'm happy with it. But there's one
problem. I have an ATI Radeon 9000 graphic card, and still when a GL
screensaver (like Euphoria) appears, it's very slow.

How do I ensure that my display is optimal for my graphic card. How can I
install the latest ATI driver (which are rpm package). Do I need them? I don't
know where the problem is...

Can anyone help me?
