Not off topic at all. Mine is a dual layer that came from CompUSA made by LiteOn. Gives me 8x on a DVD and 48x on a CD. Hooked up on secondary IDE as master and works fine under Debian and Wingdow$. Dunno why you'd think it offtopic, but lots of Debian users use DVD drives. :) That said, I have an NEC dual-layer (IDE) - model ND-3520AW. I purchased it from a local (sunnyvale CA) outfit called Surplus Computers for $50. I've had it working well for about a year now. It's a nice drive, although I did have to flash its BIOS - that made it able to recognize a much larger variety of media, as well as burn them up to 16x speed. I do have trouble from time to time on _some_ RW media - burning works fine, but trhying to read the same disk a few weeks or months later sometimes results ni lots of bad sectors. This could easily be a storage/media issue (given my environment) than a hardware issue with the burner. C. Hurschler -- David E. A friend once tested a bunch of different burners and he now uses nothing but Plextor. I don't recall ever having trouble reading or burning any CDs or DVDs. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
OT: DVD Writers
Am I having bad luck, or is this typical? I purchased an LG 4157 DVD-Writer. It burned ok, but could not read any CDs or DVDs. I excanged it and had the same result. I now have the following Samsung Writer installed: hdc: TSSTcorpCD/DVDW SH-S162A, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive hdc: ATAPI 48X DVD-ROM DVD-R-RAM CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache, UDMA(33) it reads CDs ok, burns DVDs, but can't read it's own DVDs (Media Sony DVD-R)! I can read the DVDs it wrote on my laptop. Sigh. I know this is off-topic, but I am using a Debian box ;-) but can anyone recommend a decent DVD writer? Thanks, Chris -- C. I've been using a Plextor PX-716A for well over a year now with no errors at all. Works well for me under Debian and OpenBSD. See http://www.plextor.com/english/products/716A.htm The SATA version is the PX-716SA. -- Ken Wahl signature.asc Description: Digital signature
