more PPP and PAP

1997-11-16 Thread Rick Hawkins

I can't quite get this combination to work.

changing /etc/ppp/pap so that the last line is now

  hawk * mypassword

 Don't you mean pap-secrets?

err, yes :)

I commented out the expect ogin: and expect word: ion
ppp.chatscript, which instead gives me an alarm and a failure to
  connect.

Change it to expect CONNECT as the last entry.

ok, the last line is now CONNECT and

You can't put comments into the chatscript. Remove all extra lines and try
again. If it fails, look at the end of /var/log/messages for possible
 explanation.

ok, i've removed those too. I now get as far as a ppp connection, but
now plog reports, roughly (minicom doesn't seem to allow text paste)

CONNECT--got it
Serial Connection established
Connect ppp0- /dev/modem
ICIP: timeout sending Config-requests
Connection terminated
exit

I have no idea what to change after reading the pppd manpage. . .

Help!!

PPP and PAP

1997-11-15 Thread Rick Hawkins

I can't quite get this combination to work.

My ISP uses PAP, and msoft's Internet Exporer connects rightout of the
box (well, if you consider the Dark Side as working . . . :).

I can dial up with pon, after:

putting the numbers in /etc/ppp.chatscript
adding user hawk to /etc/ppp.opetions_out
changing /etc/ppp/pap so that the last line is now

hawk * mypassword

This much failed to login as it attempted to respond to the login:
prompt (which this isp doesn't allow).

I commented out the expect ogin: and expect word: ion
ppp.chatscript, which instead gives me an alarm and a failure to
connect.

I assume I'm missing something obvious.

PPP and PAP

OK Folks,

Here is a working /etc/ppp/options file that I have tested against
the linux terminal server at buoy.com, a USR total control rack,
and a portmaster PM2er. All you need to d oto start ppp is
type 'pppd' as root. I will pretty this up and get it on a web page,
along with a scripting login (one with propmts).

The /etc/ppp/options file that comes with Debian contains the options:

lcp-echo-interval 30
lcp-echo-failure 4

This caused my connection to hang up at some random time after connecting.
Removing these options solved the problem. The -detach and lock
options may also be useful if you have another program that might try to
use your modem (e.g. mgetty).

ppp with pap woes....

1996-09-29 Thread Christopher L. Cousins
Hi

I am trying to connect to my isp with debian 1.1 and am having some
problems. This is where I am at.

1. I read the PPP-howto and the isp-howto.
2. Configed my system.
3. Dialed in using chat by way of typing

pppd

at the command line.
4. Dials in fine. connects. authenticates.
then hangs up.

5. Thats the problem. I didn't tell it to hang up.

Also, I never seem to get any proof that the ppp connection is ever
stable by way of ifconfig. It only shows the localhost info.

I am sure that it is authenticating because my isp checked there log
for me and saw me login and then logout many times in a row.

Does this sound familer to anyone? If so I would apperciate your help.

If you need any more info I will gladly give it out..

TIA

Do you have static or dynamic addressing? If dynamic, do you have
'noipdefault' in your options?

Re: ppp with pap woes....

1996-09-29 Thread Shawn Packwood
I've gotten the exact same problem on my machine since I installed Debian
1.1. I managed to trace it to some sort of security problem. If you look
in the /var/log directory after trying to connect with pppd at the log file
that just got updated, you'll notice that it states that you don't have
permission to execute some command (sorry can't remember the exacts right
now).

Unfortunately, I haven't really had the time to sort out this problem
yet, but to work around it, I simply do a 'su root' to run pppd and then go
back to my normal account. If you don't have access to the root account on
your system, then I don't have any suggestions. Sorry.
