Thanks for this pointer. Yes, I'm using unstable but somehow this
authentication business seems to have passed me by.

Are you on unstable, by any chance?

Take a look at this: http://www.syntaxpolice.org/apt-secure/

If you just want to silence the errors, make sure gnupg's installed, then do:
apt-key add /usr/share/apt/debian-archive.gpg

Yes, you are correct; I hadn't read it carefully enough. But the link I
posted subsequently provides more information, including the
advisability of installing gnupg, which I've now done.

Is that the package that actualy does teh authentication? If so, it
might explain why authentication fails.

Sorry to follow up to myself, but I've now found (via Google, which I
should have tried first) the following, which seems to be relevant:

www.debian-administration.org/articles/174

apt-get update complains that gnupg is not installed. You might want to
try installing that package.

You didn't really tell anyone what you actually do have installed, now
did you? Besides, the configuration setting described in the link I sent
you is an apt setting, not a pbuilder setting, so it still might be
right for you.

This relates to pbuilder, which I don't have installed.

See http://lists.debian.org/deity/2005/06/msg00246.html

Not really an explanation of why it happens, but it says how to get rid
of the symptoms.

Packages not authenticated - why?

2005-07-27 Thread Anthony Campbell
On my laptop, whenever I try to install/upgrade packages I get a message
saying that the packages cannot be authenticated and asking if I want to
continue. I say I do and things then proceed normally.

This does not happen on my desktop.

Any way to fix this?
