Actually http://marillat.free.fr is just the website. The website tells
you what to put in the source file. Checked it before I posted.

2004-02-25 Thread Micha Feigin
Or if you follow my post you can add the line to /etc/apt/sources.list
deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ unstable main
do

aptitude update
aptitude install mplayer-386 mplayer-mozilla mplayer-fonts w32codecs

(or instead of mplayer-386 use accelerated mplayer-686 mplayer-k6
mplayer-k7 and instead of w32codecs there is also w32codecs-light)

and you are up and running. This includes both the non-gui and the gui
versions. The only issue I am having is that for some reason it ignores
entries in /etc/mplayer/mplayerplug-in.conf.

If any of the plugins are missing you can just drop them into
/usr/lib/win32

(There is also the mplayerplug-in package I think in unstable but I
never tried it).

Re: QuickTime for Linux?

2004-02-24 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear Micha:

I'm enclosing a copy below of my instructions for installing Mplayer and
Mplayerplug-in for Xandros/Debian. They will apply just as well to Debian
itself. Note that you need to install Mplayer with a special argument in
order to get the GUI version. It's all here. Just read below.

Benjamin

Dear friends:

If you want to play Windows Media Player and QuickTime on Linux (and the
latest versions, to boot), I strongly recommend MPlayer. Using the Mplayer
plugin, you will be able to play WMP and QT (and the latest versions, to
boot) in Mozilla, Netscape, Konqueror and Opera.

Since Linux already has great DVD players (Xine, Ogle and Vlc), the main
reason for adding Mplayer is not so much for playing DVD's (though it does it
as well as the other players). It's for the browser plugins. And, believe me,
it's well worth the effort. And that is why I have taken the trouble to write
these instructions for those who could not install Mplayer using the other
instructions on our forums.

Before I proceed, you might wonder: Why is Mplayer so difficult to install?
Well, in my research online, I came across the following article on this
whole issue. Bottom line: the authors of Mplayer apparently have an attitude.
Here is the URL (middle of page):

Mplayer: The Project from Hell
http://www.linuxworld.com/story/32880.htm

OK, now on to the instructions. Here goes:

I. Installing MPlayer.

We'll install the graphical version of Mplayer.

1. In Xandros Networks, download and install the gcc 3.33 file, libgtk1.2-dev
and the libpng12-dev libraries. You will need them both to recompile the
mplayer file from source.

2. Go to the MPlayer home page at:

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design6/news.html

If you can't access them directly, do it by typing "mplayer" in Google.

Now download the following files:

The MPlayer 1.0pre3. SOURCE tar file.
The Blue default skin
The Arial Western-1 font file.

Binary Codecs:

All-in-One Package
More binary packages

(These are for Linux, of course, NOT for Windows -- that's what the text
means)

3. Unpack the files above using Ark by first creating a directory for each of
the three files (name them whatever you want), e.g. mplayer-basic, blue,
arial. Right click on the tar file and click on "Extract". This will extract
the contents into the corresponding directory. So the mplayer-basic directory
should now be filled with all sorts of subdirectories and files.

4. In the console go to the mplayer-basic directory and, AS USER, type:

./configure --enable-gui --enable-win32

This takes about one minute.

Now type:

make

This will create the mplayer program. This takes under 15 minutes (on my Dell
Dimension 8200 1.8 G with 512 meg of RAM)

Then type:

make install

This takes a few seconds.

This will install the GUI version of Mplayer on your system.

Mplayer will be installed into /usr/local/ and this is a good thing because
Xandros/Debian leaves /usr/local alone for users to do with it whatever they
want.

Here is what you should see in the console:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ whereis mplayer
mplayer: /usr/local/bin/mplayer /usr/local/etc/mplayer /usr/local/lib/mplayer
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

NOTE: Now run /usr/local/bin/mplayer in the console ONCE in order to create
the /home/user/.mplayer directory.

5. Now comes the funny part: believe it or not, but even though you selected
to install the GUI version of mplayer (which ordinarily is a command-line
application), you will not see it as yet in X11. That is because Mplayer does
NOT, I repeat, does NOT come with a default GUI skin. You have to add a GUI
skin for MPlayer to open at all. So, to add the GUI, first extract the Blue
default Skin and add it to the /usr/local/share/mplayer. You might as well
also add the Arial font. Add them as follows:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cd /usr/local/share/mplayer
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/local/share/mplayer$ ls
font Skin
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/local/share/mplayer$ cd font

Make sure that your graphics card is setup up properly (with hardware
accelleration). Without it a 600mhz Celeron is going to struggle to play
DVDs. run mplayer from a terminal and see what video device it uses. It
should use XV. If it uses x11, that's your problem.

I had a 600mhz Celeron with 256mb Ram and 128mb Radeon 7500 - the difference
between xv and x11 was the difference between smooth DVD and not.

You may need to play with hdparm to turn on 32-bit addressing and/or DMA
for your CD-ROM drive, for example:
   hdparm c1 d1 /dev/hdc
See "man hdparm".

Mplayer can play quicktime files (with the approriate plugin).

Technical/legal/packaging/various other reasons prevent Debian

Why isn't it in Debian?

Patent issues in the US and several other countries preclude its
distribution. The MPlayer developers have asked that people not
distribute crippled versions of MPlayer, as it has the potestial
to tarnish their images. Debian has decided to not include in

You can go to the mplayer site and download the file. You then just
drop them into the directory and they are accessed next time mplayer is
run, at list its worked for me. (its /usr/lib/win32 under debian).
There is an /etc/mplayer/codecs.conf file but I don't think you
actually need it to use the codecs but I don't know (like I said, just
dropping the new ones from the mplayer site worked for me, but maybe
they already appeared there and only the files were missing).
It looks from the files in my directory that it may be able to use the
win32 dlls but you'll have to check that out.

Hmmm. Mine is s3 Virge/VX 86C988 - sounds slightly different somehow.
And which version of XFree and what xserver did you use? I used Sid's
XFree - 4.2.1.1. I got a working display on a different s3 card - the
Trio 64v+ - under 4.2.1.1, but only by using the vesa xserver (the s3
xserver, which is supposed to work for that card, would not cooperate).

I don't have that system hooked up right now. The keyboard cable and

That sounds something on the order of my system. What version of X do
you run on it? I have xfree v4.2.1 on my testing system, but have been
running xserver-s3 V3.3.6. I tried to upgrade to xserver-xfree86 but
can only get a black screen. No fatal errors in the log. After a few
seconds, the monitor goes into "Power Saving" mode. Either the monitor
is shutting down for its own protection or the card is shutting down.
It all comes back up after I go back to a text screen. It really
appears that my chipset is supposed to be supported, but I dunno. It
also looks like I am trying to use the same video modes on it as I am on
v3.3.6...

Try calling "gmplayer" instead of mplayer in your shortcut. That's
what's update-menus put in my menu.
That worked, and in the process, I discovered the Add Application Button
on the Task Bar (or whatever we call it in KDE) to make a quick launch
link. :D

BTW, does it run alright on your system? I have both stable and testing
installed (separately) on my computer and both segfault. If I start it
from my menu, it begins to load, a splash screen pops up and vanishes so
quickly that I cannot see what it says. If I start gmplayer under X, or
mplayer from the console, it reports a segfault. My hardware is pretty
old - P-166, Waverider ?? soundcard (not made anymore), Number Nine (S3
chip) graphics card, if that matters. My sound is Alsa - the current
version for the respective systems.
It runs quite well on this system (ASUS A7N8X Deluxe with an Athlon 2500
Barton, 512MB RAM, on-board sound, GeForce 5600FX 256MB video card).
I'll give it a try on my testing station later to see if I can get it to
run on older hardware. The testing station is a Packard Bell Multimedia
C115 with a Pentium-200. 96MB RAM, 4MB S3 video card, and some sort of
SoundBlaster sound card.

apt-get install totem

it's a xine frontend that plays quick time formats. IMHO, the best. I've
NEVER had it crash, unlike XMMS which crashes all the time.

Thanks. MPlayer installed fine. Now I need to figure out how to
install additional codecs for it.

Also, for some odd reason, the only way I can seem to run mplayer is by
clicking on the KDE "Start Button" and selecting Run Command, and
entering mplayer. I tried making an mplayer shortcut on the desktop,
but it doesn't work. Any hints as to what I need to do to get the link
to work?

You should get mplayer. Mplayer can handle:
windows media
real video
quicktime
any other format ever invented (almost)
source code at www.mplayerhq.hu
you can compile it (even comes with a debian directory to make a .deb)
or you can get precompiled .deb files somewhere on the net.
Bijan
deb http://marillat.free.fr/ stable main

they have debs there for all versions.

QuickTime for Linux?

2003-12-19 Thread Scarletdown
Is there any way to get XMMS to play Quicktime .MOV files? Or if not,
how about a stand-alone QuickTime player? I tried apt-get install
xanim, but all I got was the following error:

Package xanim has no available version, but exists in the database.
This typically means that the package was mentioned in a dependency and
never uploaded, has been obsoleted or is not available with the contents
of sources.list
E: Package xanim has no installation candidate
And while we're at it, is there a plugin for WMMV to allow it to handle
Windows Media files as well as RealPlayer files?

I want to be able to have all of my video files handled by a single App
(in this case, XMMV), instead of having several different apps for the
different formats.
