You guess what?

Debian was installed on /dev/sda1, but it was 'boot cdrom' that
workedbizarre.

Do you remember the device name you used under the installation (something
like /dev/sda1 or /dev/hda1) for the root filesystem? If so, do this:

ok> boot floppy root=/dev/sda1

Using the device you used in the installation.

Hi! need your help again!

Floppy installation of Debian was almost successfully finished, but the
SUN box was not able to boot directly from the hard disk to continue the
second part of installation.

I have consulted the docs "Installing Debian GNU/Linux 2.2 For SPARC"
and "OpenBoot 3.x Command Reference Manual" and tried commands like
'boot disk', 'boot disk1', 'boot disk1:a', etc, but they all not worked
for me 8-(

When I typed 'boot disk', I got the following:-
--
Boot device: /[EMAIL PROTECTED],0/[EMAIL PROTECTED],1/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/[EMAIL
PROTECTED],0 File and args:

Drive not ready

Can't open boot device
---
But When I booted the rescue disk by 'boot floppy', then loaded the root
disk, I could see all the files and directories on the '/' filesystem
mounted on '/target'. So, I reckons it shouldn't be a connection
problem of SCSI or power cable as suggested in the docs.

What could be wrong, then?

P.S. I did not make a boot disk during the last installation because my
only floppy drive is found actually as the second floppy drive.

Is there an L1 button? If so, use L1 + A.

For my machine, it's Ctrl+Break to get the prompt (thanks), but no
effect on typing 'n';
when executing 'boot /fd', got the following message:

Boot device:/fdFile and args:

Can't open boot device

Nevertheless, 'boot floppy' does work!!!

Now I can start installing Debian on my UltraSparc IIi with
floppies...have fun!

Thanks again for all the advice and help from whoever responding to my
post!
Thanks!
Thank you!
Thank you all!

Oh...I don't have a 'STOP' key on my Generic 105-key International
(English, UK) keyboard.

Is there any equivalence, like Esc, Ctrl or Alt, etc?

hi again

... it looks to me like the SPARC is trying to boot from the network, as
Christopher said, hit Stop+A or Ctrl+Break to get yourself a prompt. On the
Sparc here, I have to type "n" for new command mode", and then "boot /fd" to
boot from the floppy ...

I know Debian Potato 2.2 was released yesterdady. Is there a CD image
for SPARC I can download from the Internet?

When the system started booting, I saw it soughting the floopy drive as
the green light was on and off several times.

Shortly after displaying the system information like:

SPARCengine(tm) Ultra CP1400 (UltraSparc-IIi 303MHz) OpenBoot 3.10.9 ME
with 192MB RAM.

Got this message:

Drive not ready
Boot device: net File and args:

But not going any further except the following message keep poping up on
the display:

Timeout waiting for ARP/RARP packet
Timeout waiting for ARP/RARP packet
..

FYI, My hard disk is new and nothing is on it. The box is connected to
a LAN.

Any clues?

Thanks for your investigation.

hi

Where did you fail in the boot process? ie. did the Sun access the floppy
and spit out an error message, or did it simply say something like "can't
find boot image" off the HDD?

Hi! Do anyone have the experience of successful installation of Debian
Linux on a Sun UltraSparc IIi?
I download the 1.44 floppy image for sparc (rescue, root, driver and
base) rom a mirror site, but the box did not boot the rescue disk.
Thanks for all your sharing.

UltraSPARCs have a tendencie not to boot from floppy. You should try
either the tftp image or a CDROM. Note, make sure you use the sun4u
images, since those are the ones needed for UltraSPARCs. Also, you can
sub/post to debian-sparc to get better help specific to Debian/SPARC.
