RE: sblive 'n debian
I had no problem getting this card to run under Debian slink (kernel 2.0.36) or Debian potato (kernel 2.2.10). the install script doesn't work, but following the included directions was pretty simpleAlso...I had success with both the old driver (sblive.o) and the new one (emu10k1.o). I don't know how it compares to other cards, except that in Win98, midis sound a whole lot better...haven't tried any in linux, yet =:-] Josh Miller [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Peter Moody Sent: Wednesday, August 11, 1999 8:49 PM To: debian-user@lists.debian.org Subject: sblive 'n debian is there anyone out there who has gotten this card to run under debian? I'm currently running rh 6.0 for no other reason than because the install script for the sblive actually works for redhat. I had debian up and running for a while, but I couldn't get sound going and I got tired of havin 600 megs of mp3s (not to mention games) that wouldn't work (properly). someone told me that I had to flash the card or something, maybe run setserial or what not to get the card working properlly. _ANY_ help will be greatly appreciated. thanks. -peter -- Unsubscribe? mail -s unsubscribe [EMAIL PROTECTED] /dev/null

* Marcus Johansson ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) [990730 04:27]: reboot or anything. then I switched to debain and tried to run the install script again to re-install the sound drivers (after compiling the proper kernel of course). the script thought everything went allright, but xmms (and mtv and anything else that wanted to use sound) thought otherwise. If you're using stock debian, make sure the soundcore module is installed (from the drivers disk). Then unpack the sblive tarball, choose the module of your choice (the 0.3 version includes modules for 2.0.37, 2.2.5 and 2.2.10, I believe) and copy it to /usr/lib/modules/2.x.x/misc/sblive.o Then insmod soundcore insmod /usr/lib/modules/2.x.x/misc/sblive.o, where 2.x.x is the version of your kernel. Keep in mind that, if you're using a different kernel version, you're SOL. That's about as simple as I can make it... -BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK- Version: 3.1 GCS/M d+(---) s+:+ a- C+++ UH$ P+(+++) L+++i$ E-(+) W+++ N- !o K w-- !O M+ V-- PS+++ P E Y+ PGP t !5 X+ R+ tv@ b+++ DI++ D---(++) G e* h- r* z- -END GEEK CODE BLOCK- pgpyGWwICX8ha.pgp Description: PGP signature

Uh, I was under the impression that the install script is only useful under RedHat, I think you have to do it manually. RedHat and Debian has some differences, not only the rpm/deb package systems. I've not tested the sb-live driver yet, havent bought a card yet, so this is just what i've read in the driver archive. /Marcus

I do not like companies that don't suplly information to developers! The only think the users can do is NOT TO BY UNDOCUMENTED HARDWARE! NDAs are only used to hide details about sucking low-end hardware! (See http://ultra.jcu.cz/black.html ALSA Project - Blacklist) I have a SB AWE 64 (shame on me) and IMHO the quality of SB soundcards isn't really good. So I switched back to my old Turtle Beach Tropez that does it's job much better! Bernhard -- __ ___ // )___---. \ |,( /`-- `.
