I wasn't paying full attention, basically blanked out as soon as I saw
"CUPS" (that I don't use), but your thought here triggered memory of
something I just learned while (still) battling wifi setup:

systemctl status cups.service

At least in my case, that also provides some instant feedback in
addition to the already mentioned logs.

Hope that helps someone somewhere some day. :)

Several times I got caught by this on other mailing lists, it seems the
digest option is never properly interactive. Some kind of perverse
tradition, I guess

To the OP, switch to a regular subscription and the problem is solved
(or, resign yourself to receiving what is essentially a RO version
of the list). Remember, once you know you become accountable. ;)

It's always tricky when someone who doesn't have a good command of a
language, attempts to get answers on a mailing list on a language they
don't know well. They do tend to use less words to make less mistakes,
and the email reads a bit abrupt, even rude or demanding.

I assume they post to an unfamiliar mailing list because they can't get
the answers, or don't have a mailing list on that subject in their own
language. Because of the language difficulty don't read the list
nettiquette or anything else, just hoping that someone will understand
their need. [laughing] Just goes to show that most of us are very lucky
in one way or another.

Be well,

Hah!!! Last month I built a new system and simply carried "hda"
across to the new system. Took a bit of pre-planning to ensure that
the kernel was SMP, knew about the new drivers as well as the old,
and persistent_rules needed a little fiddling with, but other than
that, it was a smooth transfer. Of course, it helped that the old
and new systems both were AMD with NVIDIA video cards...

Still, I've seen my Uncle hose Windows systems doing something
similar, because Windows so often needs external drivers.

There's another thing k3b does. It knows the squirrelly mappings
from the SunOS scsibus, target, lun or "portable"
devicename:scsibus, target, lun language in the cdrecord(1) man page
to the device names on the Linux systems people actually use.
On some distros, it (with KDE set up correctly underneath) knows
whether there is a Hardware Abstraction Layer and what names to
use so the right driver modules get loaded.

If you don't know all that stuff and you try to use cdrecord
directly, you either get lucky or cdrecord does not work.
It's nice that S. Keeling got lucky using /dev/hdd on his
particular system, but that device name will not always work.

It would be good if there were an organized "documentation"
someplace explaining to newbies what the difference between
/dev/hdd and /dev/scd are, and how to tell whether your installation
is using sg SCSI emulation or IDE-CD and how to get the automounter
to let go of the CD drive when the distro left it on by mistake,
and some of the other things that prevent cdrecord from "just working."
If it exists, I haven't found it. I use k3b and xcdroast
because cdrecord doesn't always work by itself and I've never
been able to figure out why.

Do what k3b is doing manually (it just calls external programs to do
it's work). That is what the text below is.

There are several scripts and things around that do various ways of
doing the things below, k3b is just a nice fancy gui for it instead.

This has worked well for me for years, over many versions of

${workdir}/tarX_${f} lists stuff you don't want backed up.

${f} == one of "root etc home var" (it's a loop variable).

Whatever the above command lands in ${workdir}, write to ISO image

In my experience, I don't think the problem is with cdrecord - I've
used it extensively when k3b didn't work, or I didn't trust the
graphical tools - which all / most use cdrecord to do the actual
burning.

On the other hand, I haven't used cdrecord to write DDVs with on Debian
- I just use growisofs from the command line for that - with the
exception of using k3b from time to time to make dvd archives (backups).

1. What is X-CD-Roast and who is working on it?

X-CD-Roast is a graphical user interface (GUI) for the command-line cdrtools.
You can do anything X-CD-Roast does yourself using these tools - but it's nicer
and easier with the frontend. The cdrtools contain "cdrecord" (does do the hard
job supporting all the cdwriters and is doing the actual writing of CDs),
"readcd" (reads data-tracks of CDs - its a portable replacement of "dd"),
"mkisofs" (masters CD-/images from given file-trees on the harddisk) and
"cdda2wav" (reads audio-tracks). Cdrecord, readcd and mkisofs are maintained by
Joerg Schilling, cdda2wav by Heiko Eissfeldt and X-CD-Roast by me, Thomas
Niederreiter.

Isn't cdrecord the reason that k3b doesn't work? I have found it so, because
cdrecord finds my external USB DVD dual layer burner and then vanishes it.
That was in Sarge, haven't tried it in Etch yet.

XcdRoast finds and uses the burner and is fast. I am not certain if it uses
cdrecord? But Xcdroast won't burn DVD's without another application which
isn't free because it isn't in Debian.

Such is life.

cdrecord? :)

Well, command line does work, but maybe it's not the best way to do it,
it depends on your experience level.

>From experience, k3b is mostly working 100% of the time now, but that
wasn't always the case. I've used it (and other stuff) off and on for
about 2 years - but lately (I run Etch, by the way) k3b has been solid
enough to use for all my cd burning, even iso's (which are pretty easy
to do), mp3s, flacs, and so forth.

Others you might try include gcombust (gtk based), and cdbakeoven.
xcdroast is also there, but I find the interface pretty clunky.

Which part of the installation do you finished.
There are to installation phases, the first one
install the base system, once you boot your new
installation then it ask what else do you want to
install and base config runs!!!.
If you finish the first phase then type:
#base-config and follow the instructions.

If you finish both then try:
#startx
as root and it should take you to xwindows interface
or send an error message.

If works have fun, else open an other thread and send
the error message that it sends.

Please next time put a subject. This make easy to
anyone that wants to help you, knows what kind of help

Yes, I suppose yes. But I'm afraid, that the implemented _correct_

That's _one_ answer. But I got a different one.

Let's assume you've got a file which is filled with exactly
1,073,741,824 spaces in a row. Now look at the compression-

And I have another one. He didn't mentioned that it's supposed to be a

It's impossible to guarantee a certain percentage of data compression
as that depends not only on the algorithm but on the amount of
redundancy in the data. But you could always check out the bzip2
package.

WordPerfect will run. Try the OpenOffice suite of programs. Ask whoever
is admin of that machine to install it for you.

If you are running Windows, which I strongly suspect, sorry. No help to
be expected here. Zilch. Nada.

Either way, please step away from your husband's computer before you
accidentally damage it.

Cheers,
Nick

AOL seems to do approximately zero QA on their software before
shipping it. AOL frequently breaks Windows more severely than Windows
can on it's own. To put it another way: AOL's software is fairly
universally considered crap among Windows users. I'm not sure if that
says more about AOL, Windows users or Windows itself. But no matter
how you slice it, that's the kind of low that cannot be found anywhere
on land, and science has not yet brought us the technology to build a
submarine that won't implode under the pressure of those ocean depths.

All my incoming HTML email is captured by spamassassin and routed to the spam

in that format.

It is the considered opinion of the people on this list that there is no

Actually, the double-clickable equivalent of "rm -rf /" should do it; he

It requires kernel support for your USB controller and HID. What does
"uname -r" say? If it's bf2.4, then this should Just Work. If it's
2.2, then you'll need to upgrade it to something more featureful:

$ apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.18-

where is, 386, 686, k7, etc. Make SURE you add the line to
lilo.conf that it suggests, then re-run lilo.

Re: [no subject]

2003-11-05 Thread Alex Malinovich
I just had the exact same problem yesterday while doing a fresh install.
Even though /dev/input/mice exists as a file, that doesn't necessarily
mean that the device is there. A good way to test is to do a "cat
/dev/input/mice" (no, that's not a pun :) and see if you get a device
not found or if you start getting garbage when you move the mouse. If
you get garbage, then the mouse is found properly.

In my case, I just had to install hotplug (apt-get install hotplug) and
then unplug the mouse and plug it back in. After that, everything worked
fine. Good luck.

Not quite. Microsoft doesn't have a trademark on "Control Panel,"
since it was in common use before they used it to describe Windows
configuration, and the makers of Kleenex lost the trademark in court
to common usage of the word to mean any kind of facial tissue.

Definitely Windows.
Install hardware wizard is accessed thrugh 'control panel'.
And probably an earlier distro, as XP has control panel hidden out of the box.

That was my first reaction. But given the OP's rather generic
description of the problem, we could assume s/he was using the
term Control Panel(tm) the way many people use the word
Kleenex(tm) for tissue paper. And yes, in some distros (Redhat
comes to mind), you don't need to go down to the console or an
xterm to install, configure or break such things.

"w3nt to the control panel to install hardware"... I think the OP's
one of those misdirected windoze users who find the list through
google and don't know what "Debian" means. The error messages look
windozy too.

OP: Are you in fact running the Debian GNU/Linux system? If not, I'm
afraid you've asked the wrong list. If you don't know, you're not.

You're wrong there. Non-native speakers are more likely to
understand English which deviates from the first language norm.
While vague in his or her description, the OP made perfect sense
to me, and I learned English only at school. Let's not blame on
English what's clearly a newbie-to-geek communication problem.

I suspect the OP was using some GUI-based, probably
wizard-oriented, audio configuration tool. We can safely
conclude that the OP's running either KDE or Gnome.

Help us help you.

First, since you're on AOL, I'm going to assume you're American, so
act like you know English. Welcome to the Internet, this is NOT AOL,
so don't act like it is. This list has a lot of non-native English
speakers on it that may be able to help you. I can't understand what
the heck you just said, and English is my first language; I doubt any
non-native speakers could make heads or tails of what you just said.

I gather you're having audio problems. Explain. At least make a
half-assed attempt at using the language you claim to know properly.

Second, read this so you can include enough details for us to be able
to make an educated stab at it.

Yeah, but i don't think that people who write all upper case know

Hi,

The page you're seeing is the default home page in one of the web server
packages included in our software distribution. Evidently, Tigernet2 use
our distribution. However, the fact that you're seeing this default home
page means that the people operating www.tigernet2.com have made a
serious mistake configuring their web site.

You should contact whoever operates www.tigernet2.com and ask them to
fix it. We have no special access to or involvement in their system, and
can't help beyond that.

Best regards,

RE: (no subject)

2002-10-16 Thread David Pastern

I'll leave the originating text below unaltered...

1. I'm relatively new to linux and was new to Debian until 5 or 6 weeks ago
now and I got it going. Sure I had a problem with X, but with a bit of
reading (and a minute amount of help from a friend on irc) I got it going.
No big deal.

2. I don't like the gui install for redhat. It sucks. Since I have used
redhat to some extent and can quite firmly comment on this point. I also
used expert install (text mode). It's quicker, and makes more sense to my
eyes. That is a personal preference.

3. What's wrong with bsd? OK, so it doesn't come giftwrapped like redhat
or mandrake. Big deal. An old saying: "all that glitters is not gold".
Think about it.

4. Koffice (I think I understood you right here, your writing style was a
bit hard to comprehend at that point [i'm not having a slight at you here]
is part of the KDE desktop. If you install kde you will get koffice. Don't
believe me? Check out mandrake 9 or Redhat 8. I bet they have koffice
installed along with kde. If in real doubt check out the kde website.

5. Don't knock apt. Or dpkg. They both shit on rpm. I've used both, so I
feel I am able to make a valid statement there. End of story.

6. Debian itself isn't hard to use. Setting it up is more difficult than
say, Redhat, or Mandrake. Yes linux in general could be easier to use in
some aspects - I have no argument with that comment, i've stated it
previously many times. As i've found out, and so, it seems, many other
happy Debian users, the vast majority of linux users end up at some point of
time or other, making Debian home. I will NOT change to another
distribution. Debian feels right, it feels like home. The users lists are
absolutely fantastic. Even when I make an ass of myself sometimes (ok heaps
of times lol).

7. Snazzy? mmm. This isn't a beauty contest. I don't give a rats arse
how snazzy it looks - as long as it works, is reliable and consistent.
Debian meets those requirements hands down. I think everyone here will
agree with me on that point. Looks mean nothing. Again that adage, "all
that glitters, is not gold" springs to mind. Do you want a fancy gui that
*ucks up consistently? Or something more robust that works. As it should.

8. Debian. Why did I end up choosing it as home? mmm. I wanted to learn
more about linux. OK, I don't need to know the working innards absolutely
back to front (and nor do I wish to), but I will guaranteed learn more.
Redhat held my hand so tightly I couldn't really learn. I've learnt more
from Debian in 6 weeks than Redhat on and off since (non serious usage I
might add) since Redhat 5.2.

9. Idiot proof? Well, i'm an idiot and i'm doing ok with it. Sure I need
some help from time to time, but i'm managing ok. If I can handle Debian
then anyone can.

10. I apologise to the other users subscribed to this list for my rant ;-)

Not to start any flames or ask any specific questions,I would just
like to post an experience I had with debian (my first and only one).
I usually use a redhat based product, not redhat anymore,as they seem
to have money driven issues,so now mostly mandrake. But some people I know
said,hey try debian,its better,faster and it rocks.Well this went on for a
good long while, and one day while having some issues with my mandrake and
its
lack of wanting to upgrade the distro online,I said screw it and pointed the

old browser at linux central and picked up the latest debian release
(woody).
First off the text install was pretty retro, compared to what Im used
to,but I said hey,a no frills kind of deal, lets see how it turns out.Got it
installed, luckily Ive done a number of linux based installs, because its not
very newbie friendly.Rebooted, and first thing I noticed is that it went to
the old lilo text boot: prompt.Well that wont do,but seems easy enough to
fix,hit enter and watched the boot info scroll by.Thought to myself ,wow it
looks like some BSD just crapped across the screen...okay,fix that
later..started checking out the packages I installed and noticed that some
of
the dependencies were connected by convienience, rather than true
dependencies,e.g. KDE in no way depends on koffice, how that got in,I have no

clue, built kde from source without it,installed kde from rpm without it,etc.
Oh,well, lets remove that problem...read much much much documentation
on dpkg and apt-get, okay remove packages not needed.Hey
look,linuxlogo...maybe that'll spruce up the boot process...wait a minute,I
now need to run apt-get -f because these packages I removed wont let me
progess with my new package installs.Damn.
Link lilo boot.b to boot-menu.b,run lilo -v ,reboot. Now have updating logo
scrolling amongst the bsd-looking boot

The 'kde' package is a metapackage which installs a big chunk of KDE for
convenience. If the metapackage isn't for you, remove it, install
individual components, and be happy.

> installed kde from rpm without it,etc.

Do NOT EVER use 'rpm' to install packages on Debian. It'll break.

Yup, you forced it and it broke. Don't force it. The 'rpm --force
--nodeps' mindset is dead and you need to forget about it with Debian;
one of the reasons we take so long about releases is eradicating the
need for that sort of thing.

Cheers,
