I'm running debian sid 2.6.5-1-686 with Nvidia GeForce4 MX 440. I'm not using the driver from NVidia web site, since I'm too lazy to search for it...;-) What I did is : - apt-get install nvidia-kernel-common - apt-get install nvidia-kernel-source and I've got my kernel source installed too. My XF86Config using nv as driver. well I realized that I had not installed any games ( except gnome games ) at all... I did find some slow performance to play tuxracer, chromium, etc... So, I should installed NVidia driver then. Last night I installed the driver and thank God I'm successfull... Here's what I did : debian box sid 2.6.5 and NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run. Doing : - ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run --extract-only - cd NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336.pkg1 - as root doing : make install - edit /etc/inittab and change default runlevel to 1. - reboot - cd to the directory where the NVIDIA...pkg1.run is extracted. - ./nvidia-installer - the installer suggest to change runlevel to 3. in my case, I didn't do what it suggest and go on with runlevel 1 by answering 'No'. - the installer said that there's no kernel interfaces and suggest to download...say 'NO' ! - the installer than built its own kernel interface for 2.6.5, just wait and see untill all process done. - change runlevel via /etc/inittab to 5 ( or whatever you wish ) - reboot. Installing the current nvidia gfx drivers in 2.6 is actually real simple. You can download their self-installer from nvidia.com's driver section and run it with the sh. It Just Worked for me (well, it worked after I found some good workarounds for all the lockups my nForce mobo caused). You may have to tell XF86-Config to use the 'nvidia' module, though. I do not believe there are any specifics in the kernel config to...specify. This is what I did (in order), although I'm not sure which are the important parts: apt-get install udev /etc/init.d/nvidia-glx start cd /lib/modules/2.6.5.dilbert/nvidia modprobe nvidia I must say...the touch pad is WAY more sensitive now. Hi Emma, from my basic guess, they changed the extension for 2.6. .o was object, now in 2.6 .ko means kernel object. Just a thought, I use a precompiled 2.6.4 kernel and I used the nvidia-kernel-source package and it worked for me!(tm). Is that what you used? Section Device Identifier Card1 Driver nvidia VendorName ATI BoardName Mach64 VU BusID PCI:1:0:0 EndSection didnt see anything useful in boot logs. in my /etc/modules I include agpgart and nvidia for 2.6. In any case, I installed nvidia-glx before I should have and that's why I ran into problems. I appear to now be committed to my mistakewhich would be fine if I could figure out why X says that I no longer have a screen that works. (What's the new stuff in the kernel that has to do with screen resolution? I probably messed up somewhere around there...when I did my make oldconfig) But X is still throwing up errors and my nvidia module isn't listed under lsmod. It's there under /lib/modules/[etc]/nvidia.ko, but I can't probe it (why is everything .ko now instead of .o?). I do have module-init-tools, and there are other modules loaded, so I'm not sure why nvidia's refusing to play nicely. Just temporarily, you might use the nv or vesa or vga driver to get back into X.
