the postal spam with radio shack went out years ago. they still ask for it
but much in the manner of a beggar looking for change--a raised eyebrow is
enough to put them off that pursuit. on top of that, it was the first place
that i ever saw any home-automation equipment well over ten years ago. the
problem with radio shack as a resource is that their habits and wares are
geared to appease the lowest common denominator, so they end up tied at some
vital business organ to mushysoft.

There are lots of them, go to freshmeat and do a search for bottle
rocket, or X10 for that matter.

Err, no. x10.com spams, but they are not X10. There are plenty of
other sources of X10 stuff out there. X10 is simply a protocol. It's
unfortunate that the x10.com domain went to the jerks it did, because
most people don't realize that there are other vendors out there.

Try smarthome.com. Hell, try Radio Shack, they sell X10 stuff too.
Although then you're signed up for postal spam, which isn't much better.

I use a combination of xtend and heyu to control my CM11a and listen and
respond to events from the x10 system.

Heyu is for listening and sending commands from the CM11a.

Xtend allows the computer to respond to discrete codes along with
storing the state of all devices for logic based responses.

use spamassasin for email and squid+squidguard to block the spam.

I use X10 to control christmas lights, different other lights remotely
but most importantly my iguanna's cage lights via cron.

Well, maybe x10.com does that, but X10 is an independent protocol for home
automation. X10 controllers are available from many sources other than
x10.com.

I thought X10 was just a protocol? (Possibly some companies that market
it, too, but fundamentally a protocol.)

Yeah, i also found that out, *after* i bought my X10 equipment. Oh well,
had to install a popup killer anyway :)

Probably, but I recommend against it. Take a stand against spam. X10
advertises primarily by way of spam and popups.

Thanks for the link, didn't know about that one :)

Do you also know if I can control it with a webinterface from outside ?

Yes, I used to, before I moved; now all the x10 stuff is sitting in a
box someplace in the basement :-) The exact software you need depends
on which computer-to-X10 interface you have, but

$ apt-cache search x10

gives a list of them. I have both a CM11A and a Firecracker kit; I've
used heyu, xtend, and bottlerocket, and they all work.

See http://packages.debian.org/stable/electronics/x10-automate.html

I haven't actually done it yet on my Debian system, but I have controlled
X10 devices from a Linux box.
