There's a barely documented command line option on recent X servers.
If you pass "-br" (short for "black root") to the X server, the root
window will come up solid black instead of the stippled checkerboard
you're seeing.

The exact mechanics of passing "-br" to your X server will depend on
which login manager you're using, of course.

Time to take the drivers apart...

Making the display darker? How does one do that then? You can do
that with the config files?

The proprietary nvidia drivers display the nvidia logo rather than the checked
pattern. I suspect it simply draws an image on the screen before making it
visible.

Maybe if you set your X startup scripts to immediately darken the display,
then load a background, then lighten the display again before continuing with
the rest of the login or session load...

You can't. I believe it is hardcoded in the depths of X. (Perhaps the
newer
X stuff from X.org might do something differently)
Just installed X.org and can report that it doesn't solve this problem,
sorry.

Hmm! That sounds promising at least, could not find anything in
there with the usual picture extension as name, so I'll have to dig
deeper Let you know.

Holy cow.. I just read this a couple of weeks ago and actually found the
image... it's actually a 'x' on a light-gray background that is tiled on the
screen I'm not sure what would happen if you were to mess with it..
Wish I could remember the name and local... think it was in X11 directories
somewhere...

Sorry I couldn't be more specific..
