To switch to nouveau from modesetting could be as simple as installing
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau. If it's already installed, you may need to specify 
it
in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-device.conf to contain as follows and restarting X:

Section "Device"
Identifier "DefaultDevice"
driver  "nouveau"
EndSection

If it doesn't help you might want to ask on the nouveau mailing list:

If you do, give https://01.org/linuxgraphics/documentation/how-report-bugs a 
read
first. Maybe it's worth trying IceWM or other WM before.
