I have no idea, but why don't you go to the d-i page at

http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/

and follow the links there?

No, the full CD images quoted in the three file links, and as suggested
by the empty directory structure link shown. The netinst and
businesscard images are widely available.

Where does it say on that page that the links are for testing (squeeze)?

I am looking for the CD image for an internet installation of 64-bit
testing. Debian's download pages are terribly confusing.

I should add that I did finally find an ftp page with the CD image of
64-bit testing. But the download speed was pathetic, so I killed the
download. Then I found a torrent at:

http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/amd64/bt-cd/

But when I tried to add the torrent to Transmission I got "requested
download is not authorized for use with this tracker." What is up with
that?

Actually, it looks like the 64-bit isos (at least amd64 - for AMD and
Intel Core 2, etc.) ARE in place

For other archs, I found this on debian-cd mailing list...

(To answer your question about where it mentions that the links are
for testing, "daily" and "weekly" builds imply testing.)

BTW, if you can, you might try going with the netinst (net install).
It can save lots of download time/bandwidth). Is that what you mean by
"internet installation"?

If you follow any of the links on that page you'll find a load of
"testing" ISOs. I guess we can take it that anything on the developer
pages will be a higher release than the essentially frozen "stable".

The download pages are fairly straightforward if you read through the
links starting from the home page, and in most scenarios a businesscard
or netinst intallation across a WAN would make sense.

They certainly appear to have taken away any method of grabbing a full
CD ISO though, which will scupper some of us.

64bit doesn't seem to be a problem for either intel or AMD. If you want
to install across the network:

http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/amd64/iso-cd/

If like me you want full CDs:

   http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/weekly-builds/amd64/iso-cd/

What I want is a bootable CD of 64-bit testing that will proceed to
install over the internet. And I'd prefer to download via torrent.

By "internet" I mean through my Comcast cable internet connection. I do
not mean over a local network, mostly because I don't have a local
network. :)

Most of what makes Debian's pages confusing is failure to define terms
and assuming that a newcomer understands the terminology.

That's the link I found before with the pathetically slow download. If
you back up a directory or two you find a torrent, but the torrent says
I am not authorized to download it.

Where can I find this where I can download it without taking several days?

So, netinstall iso might be what you want. If by cable connection, you mean
adsl connection, it should be OK to perform a installation in a decent time.
netinstall iso means that you boot on your Cd and, except for the base
install, everything else will be downloaded from a debian mirror.

I'm not sure if I made this clear.

I want a TORRENT that I can download with a bittorrent client like
Transmission. I don't want a jigdo, whatever that is. And I want a
bootable CD image that will continue the installation over the
internet. That is INTERNET, not a local network.

I can't find it on a Debian page and I can't seem to explain it here.
Maybe it doesn't exist. Maybe I just don't speak Debian. Maybe I'm just
stupid. But for sure I am frustrated.

The Swedish mirror I get directed to from the UK just now, maxes out my
8Mb/s ADSL line and I downloaded the netinst CD in less than 4 minutes.
Why don't you try that?

http://laotzu.acc.umu.se/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/amd64/iso-cd/debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso

I note that the time between your first post saying your download was
too slow, and your last post about trying to get a torrent was five
hours. In that time, the 148MB iso could have downloaded even if the
rate was 8kB/s.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, while it may be very fast
from your side of the world, it is painfully slow from the west coast
of the United States.

The rate I was getting was about 4K/s. Yes, I could wait a couple days
for it to finish. What I want is a TORRENT. I keep saying that in this
thread, but apparently a torrent does not exist. At least, no one has
been able to tell me where to find one. The idea of a torrent is that
it saves the sender (Debian) bandwidth.

Yes thank for for the run down of how Bit Torrent works! Have you even
searched around on any torrent sites? I found two torrents for debian
testing in a 5 second search one one torrent site...

I'm sure it's not really a torrent file you want but the netinst amd64
ISO file. The issue is the best way to get hold of it. No you're not
stupid but you probably need to understand how bittorrent works. Yes you
can grab the torrent file at:

http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/amd64/bt-cd/debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso.torrent

but there's no point; no one out there is seeding the ISO.

Jigdo works in a completely different way but is almost certainly more
reliable than bittorrent, probably just as fast, and every bit as
bandwidth efficient.

Go on - give it a try. You know you want to. =O)

PS. As far as bittorrent goes you might do well to dump that
transmission POS and try almost any other client instead.

Thanks for the link. Actually, I already tried it yesterday, but I got
an error message that I was not authorized to download the file. And
now it works. Go figure. But it turns out you are right, no one is
seeding it.

It appears I am going to have to.

My fave is Ktorrent, but it has had issues with Gnome and Ubuntu for a
long time, so I have been using Transmission instead. I admit it lacks
features, but it's stable. Everyone exclaims about Azureus, but I tried
it about a year ago and it was crash city. I suppose I should try it
again, but I'll wait until after I have successfully migrated from
Jaunty to testing.

Now I'm off to try to figure out jigdo. Thanks for the link.

*clapping* jigdo is a fantastic tool. Any doubts you have should be
answered after you read the jigdo page and understand how it works (
http://atterer.net/jigdo/#how). It basically downloads hundreds (or
thousands) of tiny little file chunks from debian mirrors all over the place
(via the terminal of course, so super efficient) - and every time for me,
it's my own internet connection that is the speed limiter rather than the
debian mirrors. I downloaded the stable 5.0 DVD 1 .iso with jigdo and md5
checksum was perfect; then I re-ran jigdo to upgrade the dvd .iso image to
5.0.2 and it's so smart it knows which files to update and takes very little
time. Think about the bandwidth savings we are getting by using jigdo to
update our .iso's instead of re-downloading full image files again and the
traffic savings on the debian servers.

Just wanted to give a "shout out" to anyone involved in creating jigdo.
Love it.

Now it's me who hasn't made himself clear. There's not much to figure
out.
First install the "jigdo-file" package as shown above.
In the second command, the URL (incorrectly shown on a new line) is an
argument to the command "jigdo-lite":

   jigdo-lite

You'll end up with a .jigdo file, a .template file, and the .iso file
you're after.

On this machine it took four minutes.

(Aside: Have a look at qbittorrent)

I did find the .jigdo and .template files for testing netinst amd64,
and I have downloaded them into a folder ~/Debian. But I am unclear
about what to put in for . From a previous
message in this discussion I thought it was
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/amd64/jigdo-cd/debian-testing-amd64-netinst.jigdo.
But that sends me into a loop where it continually asks for an Ubuntu
mirror. Why would the ISO for testing amd64 netinst be on an Ubuntu
server? On the other hand, I am doing this from a computer running
Jaunty, so that may have something to do with it. Does jigdo work only
if the computer is running Debian?

Still confused and still without a CD image for netinst of testing
amd64. Luckily I am not in a rush.

It's asking for the Debian mirror location to download from, but you gave it
a jigdo address so it sounds like it got stuck in a loop. From the Debian
instructions here http://www.debian.org/CD/jigdo-cd/:

"At the prompt "Debian mirror", enter http://ftp.*XY*.debian.org/debian/,
where *XY* is the two-letter code for your country (for example, us, de, uk.
See the current list of available ftp.XY.debian.org
locations
.)"

Here's the locations link if it doesn't come through on the email:
http://www.debian.org/mirror/list

And finally a great how-to if you haven't seen it yet:
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Debian-Jigdo/downloadingyourfirstimage.html.

You're trying to make it complicated when it isn't. You don't need to
download anything. Just install the "jigdo-file" package then run the
command:

   jigdo-lite

jigdo does the rest. There may be one or two initial questions about
preferred locations but just hitting return should work. It's easier
than bittorrent.

OK, I think I got it. That is, I now have six files, one of which is
the ISO of 148.1 MB. But after the download finished I got:

"Images offered by
`http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/amd64/iso-cd/debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso':"

Being unsure what to do, I did nothing. After a while I got:

"Number of image to download: "

Apparently the "Images offered by ..." line was supposed to be followed
by a list of images from which I could choose one. But that doesn't
make any sense if it just finished downloading the ISO that I typed at
.
