Re: Debian Squeeze got frozen
Now I know how to reproduce the bug: - Plug in my external HDD - Right click on the side bar of Nautilus -> choose "Safely remove" - System freezes That's it. The bug happen with or without Compiz enabled -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Dear Juan, I have tried your suggestion. I installed the the proprietary driver again. It worked but there was a kernel bug, so I uninstalled it and installed only the opensource driver, following your 2 links. Hope that my desktop won't freeze again Thank you, Hoang -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? I suspect your problem is caused by your previous glrx driver installation. It is known that ATI proprietary driver overwrite some Xorg libraries. Try to follow this guide to remove all signs of glrx from your system and then to reinstall Xorg driver: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/FglrxInteferesWithRadeonDriver > Here > is some packages I have installed, maybe you have some idea what driver > I'm using > > firmware-linux-nonfree > xserver-xorg-video-radeon > radeontool > libdrm-radeon1 > xserver-xorg-video-ati The driver installed on your system is open source ATI Radeon driver. But again see my advise above. You can find the reference to the problem in this Debian guide too: http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Debian I'm quite positive that your problem is in not completely removed glrx libs, since my system get frozen quite often exactly you describe it, when using glrx. Since I removed it following the links above and reinstalled Xorg driver my system stopped freezing. Though I'm still fighting to make compiz working. My card is Radeon HD 5500. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? You prefer an unstable desktop than 3D effects? >:-) Disabling Compiz is just for testing, if we find it to be the culprit for your freezes you can then take another approach rather than disabling it (upgrading Compiz, try with another VGA driver...). If disabling Compiz makes no difference, then the problem lies in another place. > What video card do you have and what driver do you use with it? Dear Juan, My video card is Radeon HD 3450. I'm not sure what driver I'm using. How do I know that? I tried to install a proprietary driver from AMD's site in my previous installation but the performance was terrible so I didn't use it. Here is some packages I have installed, maybe you have some idea what driver I'm using firmware-linux-nonfree xserver-xorg-video-radeon radeontool libdrm-radeon1 xserver-xorg-video-ati Thank you, Hoang -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Dear Camaleón, I reset my PC already and currently I don't know how to reproduce that bug. Actually that bug doesn't occur so often that I can actively observe, just about 3-4 times since I installed Debian Squeeze. A system can freeze because of many reasons... wifi or VGA drivers are the "usual suspects" at the software side but bad hardware can also lead to system locks.
