that is a very ancient cite and the many caveats
in there make me think that it is a huge waste of
time for an actual system that's been used for any
length of time...

since OP doesn't specify details we don't know
how many systems/packages involved or the amount of
data/other complexities.

hello, this is rarely supported fully in many
packages (hard enough to just insure a forward
upgrade path for all the versions possible).

i don't recommend this because you may need to
purge and reinstall every package and there may
still be odd things left-over (configuration
changes, data for users, caches, logs, etc.).

this is why it is usually a much better idea to
set up a different partition or USB stick or
something to load it on and then you can move
data/files/whatever over as you need it and then
eventually you can wipe the old partition.

best to make complete backups of everything
first.

Agreed. Downgrading some individual packages to stable (e.g. due
to a bug) is often fine (manual checks/fixes might be needed),
but I would never downgrade a full system.

If one goal was to keep some configuration changes in /etc, then
backup /etc, but do not restore it. Just do a recursive diff and
see what may need to be changed again.

The default behavior for apt is to install new versions of packages.
When changing sid by stable in /etc/apt/sources.list, apt will wait (a
long time) for a new version of a package. So if you install Sid, change
for stable, you have to wait few years for one or two new stables
versions, then you will have a stable installation...

As suggested by the link of Dan Ritter, you can change the behavior for
apt and force the installation of a selected version of packages (ie
stable). However, I do not recommend this. For example, there is no
guarantee the configuration of packages can be downgraded. It is much
simpler to backup data and reinstall stable.

This is not supported. Upgrades work in one direction.

However, if you want to try:

deb-src http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ unstable main

and then doing

# aptitude update

But still, at log in in tty console, there is:

How come?

Thanks,

If i remember correctly, you can't do a downgrade.

If you're doing that, it might pay to make sure your sources.list points
at 'sarge' rather than 'testing', to avoid an inadvertent upgrade to
sarge+1 in the future ...

I have tried this before writing to the list. I changed the sources.list
file to point only to the stable sources and I did an apt-get update.
But I got:

# apt-get dist-upgrade
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Calculating Upgrade... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

Hi

Unless you really know what you are doing this is not advised - problems
will arise with broken dependancies etc. However, testing (sarge) is
soon to become stable and replace woody. Time estimates are unclear
currently but if you keep an eye on debian-announce you should see some
news in the next couple of weeks (according to Colin W)

Other than that a full reinstall is recommended but it may be worth
saving some of your more critical conf files etc. Personally, I've
usually found a reinstall educational and an opportunity to make better
choices when setting up the system.

Good luck ;)

Re: downgrade to stable

Hi Clive,

My only concern was the release schedule of sarge. Since this will be a
production server, I would prefer to run a stable debian release. Well,
I was more than happy to read Colin's latest posting on
debian-devel-announce. I think I will keep the current installation,
following your advice ;-) .

Anyway, this was not for nothing. Thanks to Maurizio, I discovered the
/etc/apt/preferences file.
