I was not talking about applications, but... - editor: of course Leafpad is not comparable to Gedit, not in features but also not in size and dependencies, but I prefer vim anyway ;) - pdf viewer: does LXDE even have one? I'm using evince-gtk But I'm not complaining. In fact I'm quite happy with the balance of LXDE and so do my mother, father and a few other users that I have inflicted Debian upon ;) The one user that I will not be able to convert is my brother who is still quite hooked up on KDE and has inflicted that on others as well if their hardware was good enough and I was too far for the initial install. Fortunately I was able to convince him to accept LXDE even on his office machines, so the only "victim" left is his brother-in-law, but it's on my TODO list :) Kind regards, Andrei -- Offtopic discussions among Debian users and developers: http://lists.alioth.debian.org/mailman/listinfo/d-community-offtopic signature.asc Description: Digital signature

I use Fluxbox now, even on my newer machines. I like it because it is lightweight, fairly minimalist, and worked basically the same as the mainstream desktops (there is a taskbar, a dock, a menu, etc.) Some of the setup requires editing text files. I personally found it interesting to choose exactly what programs I wanted to run at startup. Setting it up was an enlightening experience -- not painful, but not without some minor challenges. I launch just about all my programs with keyboard shortcuts. I can move and resize my windows with keyboard shortcuts. I raise and lower my volume with keyboard shortcuts. I love not having to use the mouse if I don't want to. -Rob -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? For whatever reason in Squeeze Gnome is slower than molasses. Gnome was fine in Lenny. I've always had Xfce installed alongside Gnome and have always liked it for its performance and features. It's a great lightweight and relatively customizable DE. > I'm undecided what to do, but I guess it would be wise to install > parallel to GNOME 3 the most used alternative installed by users who are > subscribed to this list. > > Excepted of KDE users, XFCE seems to be the most used replacement for > GNOME 3. Am I mistaken? Although I don't feel addressed (I never used Gnome) I have used Xfce for a long time before switching to LXDE and I can say it is a good choice for Gnome 3 refugees. LXDE is even smaller and faster, but also has less features. Xfce has the panel facility. So does LXDE. Both are light weight enough to have enlightenment run on top and still give change in the footprint. I like two Window Managers, as I've had XFCE play up in the past and Enlightenment is a far different story to what it used to be and has panels also. You can hide them as well to cater for real estate requirement. Now my WM of choice.
