It results in the removal of those KDE packages that depend on mysql and
therefor of the KDE metapackage.

If you are not using the follow, you need to remove them to not need
mysql I suppose:
akonadi-server
kaddressbook
kaddressbook-plugins
karm
kdepim-kfile-plugins
kdepim-kio-plugins
kitchensync
korn
ksync
libkdepim1a

In addition, you may have installed a meta-package that pulls in a whole
bunch of packages automatically. Removing that meta package should not
be a problem in most circumstances. To be safe, you may use the "-s"
flag with aptitude to see what will happen with the removal without
actually making it happen.

Regards.

That's simply not true. I've been running 4.2 since it was in experimental
and I don't have mysql-anything installed there. Konqueror works fine as
does kmail. Calendar and address book are not installed because they both
need akonadi-server.

Actually, I was quite surprised to find that mysql was installed and the
daemon started on every boot up with the recent KDE upgrade. Trying to
remove mysql wants to remove the entire KDE collection, which is not
what I want either. I am keeping the mysql because I am not skilled
enough to surgically remove mysql without hosing my system, so the
lesser of the two evils, I guess.

That's simply not true. I've been running 4.2 since it was in experimental
and I don't have mysql-anything installed there. Konqueror works fine as
does kmail. Calendar and address book are not installed because they both
need akonadi-server.

Now, on that system I didn't use any of the meta-packages initially. I
think I've install kde-minimal since then, but maybe not. If you are going
to be picky with dependencies that's the only way to go.

Based on a quick scan of the Depends, it looks like you can install kde-
minimal or kde-standard without mysql. It also looks like you cannot
install kaddressbook, korganizer, kpilot, kdepim, or kde-full without mysql.

I also have a kde-full installation on my laptop -- neither are "broken".
Konqueror still crashes/fails to render more that firefox, the panels don't
behave correctly all the time, konsole appears to have unlearned how to
automatically remember the correct window sizing and won't let me turn off
Ctrl+S/Ctrl+Q, but all of these can be worked around.

I happen to know the choice of "none" will not be supported by upstream.
Akonadi requires an SQL backend, period. They went with "embeded" mysql
because, supposedly, they couldn't get the performance they wanted out of
sqlite.

As I said before, it is possible to use much of KDE without Akonadi, for
now.

That depends on how you define "working KDE". The KDE metapackage depends
on packages that depend on mysql-server. Most KDE packages do not depend
on mysql-server. You should be able to install KDE, remove mysql-server,
and allow the packages to depend it to be removed as well. On the other
hand, you could just install the packages you need. KDE is just a bunch of
packages that the KDE maintainers think go together. It's already clear
that you don't agree with them.

Maybe they do ... I don't like gnome; I switched back to startx and
the only thing that's missing is the panel. And I'm using 6GB less
memory now. But KDE is cute ...

Hm, isn't there a panel that doesn't have anything to do with gnome or
kde? Just a panel? A panel that has a clock and can show a calender
when you click on the clock? That was the most useful thing of the
panel ... or maybe just a clock like that?

Yeah, aptitude was unable to resolve all dependencies and forced me to
remove some packages I didn't want it to remove. Now they are all
resolved, no packages are broken, but kdm doesn't work.

How do I start kde without kdm or gdm? Is there an equivalent to
startx? Or can I just start the panel? That's the most useful part
besides konqueror as web browser. I don't need anything else of it.

And btw, starting kde with kdm never loaded my .Xressources, and
having numlock turned on automatically doesn't turn on the led. Is
there a way to fix that?

My mistake, it's mysql embedded as quoted from apt-listchanges :

"amarok (1.92-1) experimental; urgency=low

* Now Amarok uses MySQL Embedded (MySQLe) as its default collection
database engine. However, as of 2.0 Beta 2 (this release), there is no
migration path provided from the old SQLite based database to the new
MySQLe basedone although this feature is planned for later Amarok 2
(pre)releases. This effectively means that you will have to rebuild your
collection losing all ratings and other additional information about
tracks you have collectedwith 2.0 Beta 1 (1.90).

* It is very likely that the MySQLe backend used by Amarok will change
in the next releases. Therefore, you might be forced to rebuild your
collection again in the near future.

I don't see that konqueror depends on mysql-server. It depends on
libqt4-sql-mysql, but that's just a driver library.

Which ones are those? I also got mysql with my KDE upgrade but would
like to get rid of it.

Yes, I removed them and now KDE is broken. I even tried to get just
konqueror back to use as a web browser, but that doesn't work without
the mysql-server :(

There should be options to use one or another RDBMS --- or none if you
don't want to.

How do I do that? KDE4 would be nice to have if you can finally have
the sroll bars on the left ... If not, I don't really care.

Then don't install those applications. Problem solved.

I hope so, as I would greatly prefer using sqlite or postgresql (both of
which are already installed for my own reasons) rather than install a third
RDBMS.

However, I do know that the KDE/Qt Debian Maintainers do not have the time
to fix it, so you might mention it to upstream.
