Why do you want to install old-stable?

Have you checked the debian-CD ftpsite? See the debian web page.

Beside the question why to install sarge, of course you might have your
reasons, I think I found the latest build for the latest point release
here:
ftp://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/archive/3.1_r6a/i386/iso-cd/

Re: Sarge Netinst

2005-04-12 Thread Alberto Rivera
Yo en lo personal lo hice paso por paso que debe ser lo mismo, y para
que me reconociera bien todos los dispositivos de hw del notebook
actualice primero el kernel... así:

nano /etc/source-list
(cambie el sarge por el sid)
- apt-get dist-upgrade
- apt-get install kernel-image-2.6.11-i686
- apt-get install x-window-system
- apt-get install kde
- apt-get install kdm
- apt-get install mozilla-firefox
- apt-get dist-upgrade

$ dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
dejalo todo como esta y cuando llegas a las opciones del mouse prueba
con /dev/input/mice o /psaux.

Yo tengo un compac y me funciona bien.

I suspect none of the above. Those are really old drivers, used for
 non-ATAPI drives. I have a Sony CRX175E2 drive, which is a
similar-enough model number that I strongly suspect it uses the same
driver. This drive is ATAPI-IDE and will read if you use the ide-cd
driver. For writing, the ide-scsi driver is required although this
driver will work for reading as well, which simplifies things. See
 the CD-Writing-HOWTO for further information.

Done.

Try 'modprobe ide-scsi' and see if the drive is reported. If so, add
 ide-scsi to /etc/modules.

  # modprobe ide-scsi
modprobe: failed to load module ide-scsi

Now what? My CD-RW is in the secondary master.

Please help. TIA.

This is very strange. I looked up that drive on the Sony web site and
it is definitely an ATAPI drive. It has the same specifications as my
drive (which apparently is the OEM version of the same device), so I
have no idea what the problem might be.

I installed a Samsung SC-148B CD driver in my secondary master and tried
the installation. Guess what. I had exactly the same problem. It seems
not to be something of the CD or CD-RW driver. Might it be the
motherboard?

Please help. TIA.

Maybe it would help if you tried to get it working after the
installation, from a running debian (or other linux) system. Then we
could tell if the debian installer is at fault, or if the kernel lies
somewhere in kernel or hardware space.

None of those. Those are all meant to drive the older CD-ROM drives on
proprietary interfaces.

I suspect what's more likely is that you have your drive on some interface
that the install kernel doesn't recognize, such as an add-on PCI
controller.

How is this drive interfaced?

You don't need a 'special' driver for a modern ATAPI drive. Load the IDE
drivers, a default on any non-scsi system, and you have all the drives
on an IDE controller covered.

By IDE, as most of CD-RW drives.
