A GUI for LaTeX? Who would have ever thought of such a thing?

Description: a free software desktop publishing program
Scribus is a free software layout program for GNU/Linux similar to a
couple of proprietary programs from Adobe and Quark.
 .
Unlike other programs Scribus uses only Type1 fonts of the X-Server.
Therefore there is no fiddling around with installing extra fonts. For
this reason the number of fonts is a little bit limited, but you can be
sure that your monitor shows exactly the same as the printed output is.
 .
Documentation for this package is available in either French, German or
English. Please choose your appropriate scribus-doc-XX documentation package.

i wrote to corel back in january asking about the fate of wordperfect, and if
they had any interest in releasing source for wp51--for which there really is
no commercial market, anymore--into the community. all i got back was a
generic response stating that wp8 and office 2000 were discontinued "with
chances of renewal studied based on market demand." whether that meant, was,
is being, or will be studied is apparently anybody's guess. no mention of
source was made in any part of the reply.

corel strikes me as a pretty schizophrenic organization, given their
on-again, off-again relationship to linux; which is a shame, since wp8 was
way less of a memory hog than staroffice and far more flexible than abiword.

It doesn't really say what format they are, perhaps they have various

It may have been in a version of Office prior to Office 2000. Corel
did have a free version of WP 8.0 for a while, but it was a bit buggy
and required a lot of libc5 stuff.

Have you tried Abiword? It handles a lot of Word documents fairly well
(better than WP does).

Well, not quite. AFAIR, it did not include the font installer and was
limited to fonts it came with (which is crippling in my view). It was
also based on an earlier code base than the "8.1" which came with
Corel Linux OS. The version with Corel Linux OS fixed a number of
bugs, specifically really bad performance with images.

That said, it was a better version for authoring than WPO2k/Linux, but
worse at Word imports.

Yes, in fact I have WordPerfect 8 and it is a perfectly good program,
partly because it was ported to linux. There is another little helper
available (not a necessity) called wp8filtrixfix that helps improve its
M$Word importing:
http://freshmeat.net/projects/wp8fix/

Unfortunately when they came out with the whole office suite it was
ported to Wine rather than truly ported to Linux, and it is very
problematic.

If anyone is interested in wordperfect8 you can find it thru google, but
it may take some work. AFAIK, it is not available any longer as a
download from Corel. However, they still give you a registration number
at their website, and it is a very quick & easy setup, you fill out the
form & get the number right there, not emailed later. The download
version is a full-featured WordPerfect, not crippled or time limited.

I don't know anything about publishing and page layout, but since not
many have answered...

I've seen comments from people in the field that Linux is definitely
just "not there yet". Others prefer TeX, LaTeX, etc, and those will
swear by them & say it's the only way.

If you want something like PageMaker, Quark, or whatever, I think you'll
have to wait. Adobe FrameMaker is available for Unix, but AFAIK it's
just on Solaris & a couple of the other "big" *nix's.

I saw something quite recently about a project to produce a Linux
competitor to theses type programs, but I don't think they've released
anything yet & unfortunately I forget the name.

There is also Deneba Canvas, and KDE's KWord probably claims to be in
this league.

Well, then, by that assessment, I should have a usuable copy of The Bridge
Community Newsletter within two or three days of the Linux Install.

Andy,

Good advice when you have to start from scratch. But with a directory
full of prototypes and macros which can be clicked into the source text
things get a lot easier. If you can get a local expert to jumpstart you
then you'll be producing output in a few hours.

It took me five hours from the start of installation in 1985 to having a
printed copy of the first chapter of Living on 12 Volts with Ample Power.
After that I struggled for many hours tweaking and experimenting, but it
has been well worth the effort.

This answer (David's not Alan's) was so funny I fell out of my chair
laughing. First of all it's not Correll Office 2002, it's Corel's
WordPerfect Office 2000. And as Alan pointed out, it was abandoned long
ago. Which is a damn shame, because there was potentially a very fine
product there, but it needed a lot of work. To get it running on a
recent Linux distro you will probably need to do some work; install
corelwine or some other compatible wine, maybe even libc5-compat or
a couple things like that, but even if you ran it on Corel Linux, it was
so buggy as to be, well, maybe not unusable but extremely annoying.

P.S. I followed the link and noticed you can download Corel PhotoPaint9.
http://linux.corel.com/products/pp9/download_instructions.htm

I wonder if some of Corel's Linux projects are still alive...

[link to dead product omitted]

If you want something free (speech) and works like Quark, try Scribus:
http://web2.altmuehlnet.de/fschmid/

If you want something free and works a bit like FrameMaker, try KWord (a
KDE project).

They're not quite there, but at least they're going somewhere. And if
they aren't, well at least you have the source.

A bit more research would show that these products are essentially
abandoned by Corel, have seen no bug-fix releases to reduce the huge
amount of bugs therein, and work best under a version of corelwine for
which you can no longer find the sources.

If the "people" who made those comments had take 15 minutes (that's
how long me to do a google search, and find Correl's Linux Product)
to do a little web reseach.

They would have known that BOTH Correll Office 2002 and CorrellDraw
