apt-cache search streaming looked like it had a couple of
possibilities. Listed among them was icecast-server and liveice. Never
tried either one, but they look like they might work.

Shoutcast will stream mp3's, but you need to broadcast to it so it has
something to stream. But it is available for *nix variants

Re: Streaming server for linux

2003-01-29 Thread debian
Check out icecast. Last time I checked it out I had to use liveice to feed
mp3s to it, but I see now there are two packages instead of one:
icecast-server and icecast-client. The icecast server was very stable when
I was using it, and there's also an xmms plugin (package name
xmms-liveice) to feed it. I never tried the xmms plugin though.

icecast was fairly simple to setup. Just have to read the docs and edit
one config file, if nothing's changed since last year. :)

I found gnump3d and libapache-mod-mp3 (I have a preference for the
apache mod since it is one less daemon running and one less network
port to open up). They can stream both MP3 and OGG files. They're
both fairly easy to setup, if you follow the directions. I
discovered, though, that WinAmp can't play a streamed ogg. XMMS has
no trouble with it. (Also, 128Kbit upstream isn't really sufficient
either, unless the audio file has a lower bitrate)
