Re: System freezes after update to Jessie 8.4 [workaround]

2016-04-04 Thread Joerg Desch
My personal workaround...

yesterday, I had used GNOME3 Classic which reduced the freezes down to
"every3 hours". ;-) Today morning, I've downgrades the kernel back to the
previous version and I'm back to GNOME3 and Firefox for 2 hours now. No
freeze so far...

What I've done is:

aptitude install linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64=3.16.7-ckt20-1+deb8u4 linux-
headers-3.16.0-4-common=3.16.7-ckt20-1+deb8u4 linux-headers-3.16.0-4-
amd64=3.16.7-ckt20-1+deb8u4

I'm also getting the same type of random lockups though I haven't isolated
it to Iceweasel (though FWIW, Iceweasel is typically running when it locks
up).

Like you, the system was rock solid until the 8.4 upgrade (which went
smoothly); the xorg process turns zombie and this is with a box using a Radeon
HD 4250.

This is a known problem, see:

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=819881
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=817874

The only workaround I'm aware of is to downgrade the kernel to
3.16.7-ckt20-1+deb8u4.

Yes, the drivers consist of several different parts, and this looks
like a problem in the kernel driver.

Some additional information...

After the X-Crash, neither CTRL-ALT_F1 nor CRTL-ALT-DEL works. Even CRTL-
ALT-BACKSPACE doesn't work.

But I've tried ALT-PRINT-REISUB and the system reboots.

OK. If I find some time, I will have a look at this.

For the kernel-image package? Is the "radeon" stuff part of that package?

I am experiencing system lockups immediately after updating to Debian 8.4.
The system has behaved perfectly for months prior and it was fully
updated at 8.3 without any problem.

It runs LXDE on a Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 mainboard 2704665 with AMD FX6300
CPU and 8GB ECC RAM.

It now crashes /usr/bin/X after a minute or so of using iceweasel.

The problem occurred first without (and also persists with) package
amd64-microcode installed (I tried this because it was updated recently
to fix security issues with my cpu).

I hope someone will give some guidance here as to where I can usefully
report this, and/or suggest any other investigations a smart person
would take before doing so.

Thanks.

The 3D part seems to be the correct location, but the mentioned kernel is
older.

What kernel are you running? Looks like it might be this:
https://lkml.org/lkml/2016/3/6/257

If so, you could probably work around it by installing/booting an
earlier kernel.
