If one of your motives in using Linux is to save
money--and this is certainly a reasonable motive,
though perhaps not the most important one--you should
indeed do that. But much commercial software does run
properly using WINE.

$ apt-cache show vrms
Package: vrms
[snip]
Description: virtual Richard M. Stallman
The vrms program will analyze the set of currently-installed
packages on a
Debian GNU/Linux system, and report all of the packages from the
non-free
 tree which are currently installed.
 .
Future versions of vrms will include an option to also display text
from
the public writings of RMS and others that explain why use of each
of the
installed non-free packages might cause moral issues for some in
the Free
Software community. This functionality is not yet included.

Is "common sense" really valid?
For example, it is "common sense" to white-power racists that
whites are superior to blacks, and that those with brown skins
are mud people.
However, that "common sense" is obviously wrong.

;) I figure that someone who is using Linux and doesn't want to use
Windows would like to steer clear of most commercial software until all
open-source alternatives have been eliminated.

He would say that commercial is not the same as non-free.

People who install Debian also using commercial s/w?

Oh, the horror! Quick, call RMS

Surely there are better suggestions than that. Crossover is commercial!
$40

But, I haven't had much luck with wine on Debian Stable. Backports
didn't have a wine package last time I checked, and I've never tried
building it from source.

Still, you may want to try winetools (or something like that, it is on
winehq.org in the downloads) if it will work with the stable version of
wine. It helped me when I was trying out wine the first time. Also,
winehq.org has an application database that may have the ICQ program
you're wanting to use listed.
