2.0.34, I believe, though 3C905Bs work well here under 2.0.35

Once you've got networking working (which means a NIC module, I
guess), all you need is a userspace program called Samba. Of course
there's a Debian package, and the docs are good. Works here.

Thank you all for the help in regards to the 3-Com
network card and the kernels. It was for an off-list
friend who is trying to set up a network in a high
school here, in Colorado. I am running the 2.1.132 kernel,
myself, but there are a couple of 3c905B cards here, waiting
to be installed, too. :-)

Which is the earliest kernel that will work with 3-Com
   3c905B cards?

do you really need earliest? what about latest?

nevertheless, it works for me in 2.0.36, compiled as module
3c59x.0

And is there any documentation on the Net that
tells which kernels support which hardware? ...trying to help

samba? but it's separate from kernel package

   Thanks!

I have a machine here with two 3c509's in it, there's a standard driver
for them named as 3c509 in the kernel. (might even be as a module, in
which case try `modprobe 3c509`)

Good Luck!

Sorry, I've not yet had sufficient caffiene for the day yet :) You were
after 3c905 not 3c509, as I've ranted about below.

The 3c905's are supported in .36, unless you've got good reason not to
upgrade, I'd suggest you do so. I've had no problems with the one 3c905
(aka Vortex) card I've played with. *grin*
