Thank's for the advice.

I've edited the file by hand comparing it to the one in my SuSE 8.0 box
so now I'm going to give it a try

One thing that surprices me is that root is not allowed to use the
X-server, why on earth is this and how can I change it?
I sometimes need to be able to log into X as root.

Thank's for your reply. I fixet the whole thing by comparing with the
file in my SuSE system and editing the XF86Config-4 file by hand.

 Hi,

I've a similar but not identical Rage 128 video card.

I simply used the debian configuration tool and all worked:

   dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

 or equivalently

   wajig reconfigure xserver-xfree86

Be sure to set the horizontal and vertical ranges large enough. I've
had the No screens found error when these values were incorrectly
 set.

 Hope you get it going.

 Regards,
 Graham

 Hello all!

I've been trying to configure the X-server in my new Woody installation
on a box with only supported hardware. In the days of XFree86 3.3.6 the
configuration was as easy as apple pie, in Woody it's a real PITA.
My question is: what is THE tool to configure the X-server in Woody?

You can try the xf86cfg tool, but I've better luck editing the
XF86Config-4 file by hand.

I've made at least three installations without getting the X-server to
run properly, right now it simply doesn't start. The
/var/log/XFree86.0.log file is attached here, I would be very grateful
if someone could take a look at it and see if there is something there
that could give a hint why the server doesn't start.
The only thing I can find that I don't understand is:

In XF86Config-4, in the Section Device if there is an option:

Option UseFBDev true

Comment it out. This has worked for me in the past, albeit with a
Matrox G400. Then try 'startx'.

Good luck.

 The hardware is:
 Ati Rage 128 video card
 Gateway EV700 monitor
 Standard 105 SE keyboard
 Microsoft Intellimouse (IMPS/2)

All of the more common Linux dists (several versions of each of them)
have been running on this hardware including earlier versions of Debian.
What am I missing when it comes to configure X in Woody?

 All the best,
