Use apt as your access method with dselect. Put the netgod site in
there in addition to the site for stable. The latest available versions
will be shown on your selection list. dselect/apt will identify any
dependencies for you. If you have already installed packages from the
CD and then run dselect/update using the web sources, dselect will
choose to update to newer versions of any packages you have. This is
desireable.

1999-06-30 Thread Jonathan D. Proulx
Hi,

add the following line to /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://ftp.netgod.net/ x/

this will source the slink versions of XF86 3.3.3.1
and the SVGA server is the one you need (I'm using a TNT card)

See the many threads on this list about getting the Matrox G200 card
working under Slink. I suspect that they apply to your problem also.

TNT is supported in 3.3.3.1. I don't know which server you should use
though, I suspect that the SVGA server would be the one as that's
usually where new card drivers get added these days.

For some values of bugfree. There are about 375 outstanding bug reports
against the X packages, and many of them date back to well before I took
over the package.

More speficially, what I'm trying to do with slink X is get the
release-critical bugs out (which I've done), get it building without
changes on all arches that are releasing for slink (i386, m68k, alpha,
sparc), and make sure the installation and setup procedures aren't goofy
(especially for people who don't already have an XF86Config file).

Probally with the potato release.

The X maintainer is smart enough to get the slink versions bugfree
before proceding to the potato versions of the packages. XFree86 3.3.3
was released much to late relative to the freeze of slink.

In the meantime, you can drop the binaries of the server into place in
a 3.3.2 installation. I just dropped the SVGA_Server file onto my
desktop, hoping it will stop the crashes on my screwball card (they
only happen on some realvideo feeds, but the trial is coming up.)

So far, it's working, but i'll need to wait for a heavily loaded
server to see if it solves the problem. And it didn't solve the
artifacts in 16bpp, but they might be better now . . .

Yes, as soon as Branden is done with the X in frozen(slink), he will start
working on 3.3.3 for unstable(potato).

Just go to xfree86.org, download the 3.3.3 Xserver (by itself)
that you need, and drop it in in place of your current Xserver
(make a backup just in case). Works for me, and a good way to get
the new functionality without having to wait for Debian 2.3.

The SUSE special xserver for the card is exactly the one that is
present in XFree86 3.3.3. If you have no compelling other reason to
upgrade, the easiest thing to do is to wait until the debian packages
show up. They will be there in unstable in some time. Trying to use
the xfree binary distribution instead of the debian packages might
introduce more trouble than it solves.
