So you neither know. Okay, then please don't say _there's_ a bug ;-)

..IMO both, 1.) a feature, because it does this thing differently
than apt-get, which offers a viable workaround when a bug hits it,
and 2.) a but, because aptitude's error message suggestion does
not work her, because of a "second bug". We've covered this, no

There's no much room for guessing: $subject is the "subject" of this
thread which -regardless its usefulness- states:

***

Bug or feature?

Does "aptitude changelog" need the corresponding "deb-src" entry in order
to avoid the error message ("E: You must put some 'source' URIs in your
sources.list")?

This thread is about aptitude and and two bugs that it seems to have
when using "...changelog...", not about apt-get. Do you suggest that
someone use vi when they have a problem with emacs? Or GNOME and KDE?
Or ...? You could've also suggested reading changelogs on

Having to get by on teensy-weensy amounts of bandwidth means this
squeeze install has *never* had deb-src entries in sources.list.
Never got an error from it...

It's either a bug, or perhaps something is installed which is only
available from a deb-src entry.

Thanks but I didn't say that it didn't work with apt-get only that
aptitude seems to need "deb-src ..." entries.

You don't need one. The only reason you'd need one is if you are going
to be compiling any software.

True, but "aptitude changelog ..." seems to require "deb-src ..." entries:

Without "deb-src ..."

# aptitude changelog grub-pc
Err Changelog of grub-pc
E: You must put some 'source' URIs in your sources.list
E: Changelog download failed: Download queue destroyed.

Ok. Thanks everyone for the quick answer. Now, by looking at the bugs
reported against aptitude I understand that there are
quite a few issues with changelogs.

I was mainly using the UI, in which changelog (Chift+C) worked (I was
experiencing #587775) and today I noticed that this also stopped working
(#669569). Then I noticed that the CLI is also brokend. So.. yeah...
I'll just wait for things to get better.

There's a missing "deb" there.

You have no "source" repo listed.

deb-src http://cdn.debian.net/debian testing main contrib non-free

For the remainder errors (which I also get), there's an open bug:

Yeah, poor pasting-skils. My sources.list contains in fact the correct
first-line:

deb http://cdn.debian.net/debian testing main contrib non-free
