well, its a mystery to me, but I'd start by 1) making sure I'm fully
upgraded, 2) eliminate the duplicate libflashpayers (you've got both 7
and 9 installed, 3) upgrade that java plugin.

Is this problem a short thing? or does it persist? IOW, does it grab
all that cpu and memory and then give it back or does it keep it
forever?

others have asked, what versions of which firefox derivative are you
running?

i assume by pages you mean what web pages. no pages in particular. after 10-15
minutes it's just grabbing most of the cpu. as to plugins, i don't know how
to determine these. as for plugins, are these the items which come up with
firefox's tools/addons choices?

You can determine your installed plugins by typing about:plugins in
the URL bar.

Another question: Do you usually have many tabs open at once?

Do you mean that you compiled your own firefox, or do you really mean
the debian packaged Iceweasel? What version?

Assuming that you're running Debian, what version?

Type top
then type q to quit.
Post the first few lines to the list.

Could be java or javascript running.
Try turning them off:
Edit - preferences
Content tab
uncheck java and javascript.
or go to the adanced button and turn off all the things java and
javascript can do.

Also browse through tabs and hit stop to see if the cpu goes down.

You could be out of dram.
Typre free and post what it says.
