For colour HP printing, you want the hplip driver--gutenprint
only supports BW PCL, i.e. older models not supported by
hplip.

You need pnm2ppa and cupsys-driver-gutenprint for HP 710C printer, I have one
and it works.

print from things like xpdf

Sounds like you're at the limit of the printer under
Linux. I have a 712c, and have the same empty space.
You could set up separate print queues at different
media sizes / print quality under cups, but I don't
think this printer line (710, 712, 720) will ever be
fully supported under Linux. I later purchased an
Epson 785 EPX that prints beautifully under Linux.
Unfortunately, I seldom print, and the print heads
constantly clogged on me, so I gave the Epson away. The
712 always works, though for photos and artwork it
leaves something to be desired.

If you ever do find a better PPD or method of printing
from gimp-print, I would be interested in hearing about
it.

I assume you have correctly set up your printer and verified it really
works. If so...

1. in GIMP go to File - Print - Setup Printer,
2. in Printer Make select HP,
3. in Printer Model select something that is close enough to yours,
HP DeskJet 690 series would be the one I would try first, but
feel free to experiment with other options,
4. select Standard Command and select your previously configured
printer in Printer Queue, do not select (Default Printer),

You should be done. Try to print something.

If it does not work, make sure that your have really setup CUPS
correctly. Check if hp-toolbox is not complaining about anything. Also
take a look at output of hp-info. hp-setup and hp-makeuri may also
prove useful.

They are in hplip package. You should also install hplip-ppds (or

There may be other reasons, but you should install hplip anyway, as it
contains CUPS backend for HP printers, a driver as you may call it. It
also contains various nice to have tools for ink level monitoring, color
calibration, etc.
