I gave up pretty quickly on Pan (trying both versions). knode was better but didn't provide much better filtering. I've installed leafnode and after some initial fun and games with tweaking settings have it working in conjunction with Thunderbird. Pan worked OK here, but the version that's in debian now would lock up reading some largish newsgroups - it's memory requirements are tremendous. I'm running unstable and had pan 0.113-1 running for a bit, then reverted to pan 0.14.2.91-5. The more recent beta builds (they release weekly snapshots on pan2.rebelbase.com) may work better for you. They are not that difficult to build on etch. There is a new version completely re-written, got it compiled/installed but could not get it to launch, uses $HOME/.pan2, the old pan should work though. Can be solved by creating a symlink to /usr/local/lib/libpcre.so.0.0.1: ln -s /usr/local/lib/libpcre.so.0.0.1 /lib/libpcre.so.0 BTW, Arthur Marsh IS using this new version, Pan 0.113. Arthur. I've used pan for about 6 years or so now. This new version in unstable is just _awful_. I despise it. Previous functionality has been lost, years of filters are now unable to be used due to different filtering syntax in the scorefile, bad interface, yada yada. I reverted to version 0.14.2.91 and have put it on hold. I agree that there are still unstable parts, although I don't tax Pan too heavily, but it is much faster than the older versions and is the future of Pan, as I understand it. Knode comes close, but I still prefer Pan, although the only complaint I had against Pan about a year ago was that it did not support binary uploads.
