libreadlineg2 is "hiding" in the Incoming directory of our ftp server,
where it should make its way out once our archive maintainer catches up
after his vacation.

The "g" suffix on many new library packages is an indication that they are
linked with libc6 (glibc2) instead of libc5. We are working on migrating
to libc6 for Debian 2.0, while also assuring backwards compatibility and
hopefully providing both libc5 and libc6 development environments.

That it's for 'g'libc.

Get and install the newest libreadline2.

And please: don't crosspost user questions to debian development miling
lists.

You need to have first installed a recent version of libreadline2, which will
put itself in a libc5-compat directory and so not clash with libreadlineg2.

Actually most programs that use libreadline2 now have libc6 versions that
use libreadlineg2, but there are still a few left.

That's because you don't have the menu package installed. I know I should
have made the postinst so it didn't die on finding that error; I'll release
a patched version soon.
