I guess, the output of either cat(1) or less(1) should be more
informative.

Well, I guess that the card was somehow left undetected by
snd-sb16.

I wonder, why isapnp was disabled? Could it be enabled, or
could the card's configuration be specified explicitly via the
module parameters (use $ /sbin/modinfo snd-sb16 to get the list;
port=, irq=, dma8=, dma16= are the usual ones.)

my memory is poor
I have added kernel option noisapnp to etch
I check /boot/grub/menu.lst and
add the option to lenny
This time lenny work
(maybe the card is a clone, not very very compatible)
Thank Ivan anyway!

Anything at dmesg when you run the above command?

 kernel messages below seem to be related to SB detection

 Jul 23 12:58:31 debian kernel: [ 22.029070] sb: Init: Starting Probe...
 Jul 23 12:58:31 debian kernel: [ 22.029195] sb: Init: Done

And nothing more? :-?

Is the ISA card properly initialized/detected/
configured by the system? Have you tried with alsamixer?

Greetings,

To Camaleón:

Thanks! You always offer help when I seek help.
The card is correctly installed, so MS Windows and etch can use it.
The problem is with lenny.
I will install a PCI sound card, it's easy
Thanks anyway!

ISA cards need to be properly initilized to be used and windows is not
linux (meaning that windows could be doing this automatically but you
still need to manually setup in your linux box) :-)
