I haven't seen the Gnome version above, but Xandros has a pretty slick
implementation that pretty much works like multi-user login does on
Windows XP.

Not as such. A common thing to do is to switch to an X console
(Ctrl+Alt+F1), log in as another user, and have them run
'startx -- :1'; then, with default settings, Ctrl+Alt+F7 will get you
the first X session (on :0), and Ctrl+Alt+F8 the second (on :1). I
think most display managers can be configured to manage multiple X
servers as well.

Not yet. Looks like gdmflexiserver is going that way, but not quite
there.

i did this with gdm - maybe it will work for you:

in /etc/gdm.conf, find the [servers] section. there should be a line
like this:

   0=Standard

i added the following lines under that:

   1=Standard
   2=Standard
restart gdm:

/etc/init.d/gdm restart

now there are three GDM login screens available; you can switch between
them with ctrl-alt-f7 / ctrl-alt-f8 / ctrl-alt-f9.

i use this so that my wife and i can have our own desktops up and
running simultaneously.

Not quite, but there something similar.

If you're using Gnome 2.4, there's a New Login item in System Tools
under the Application menu item. This will create a new X11 session on a
different virtual terminal, complete with (x|k|g)dm. I uses gdm as my

Your current session still exist and you can get back to it either by
selecting the Quit item on the second gdm screen or doing the
Ctrl+Alt+F# where # is the virtual terminal of your original X11 session
(most likely # = 6).

neat! that's great. additionally, if you have the xnest nested
x server installed, you can get a login in a window without even
leaving your old session.
