That's very similar to the script I shared.
I preview the file in gthumb, but mostly because it will allow some
minor editing (cropping, resizing), if needed/desired, before I scp up
to my server or something.
(for those who like, ristretto is another decent viewer, but like
gpicview, also offers only a preview, and no editing).

That's fun.
My script doesn't beep or anything.
I should implement that, just for kicks.

Thanks for sharing. I just have the gpicview installed and I do have the

Are you using an utility to take the screen shot?
If so - which utility?
If not - what happens if you try:-
Ctrl+PrntScrn
Gimp = New Image = Edit = Paste as New Image

Also:-
Does this still occur after doing the:-
# apt-get upgrade
?

I thought XFCE used Thunar?

Yes, even after apt-get upgrade it's still the same. It's the only took

I just have a little script bound to the Print Screen key.
I understand you are using XFCE, within which there is a
means of binding keys through some graphical interface, I believe.
(I use openbox, so just added the binding in my rc.xml).

The script simple does
#!/bin/bash

filedate=$(date +%m%d%y%H%M%S)

scrot $filedate.jpg

gthumb $filedate.jpg

exit

This creates a screenshot with scrot, with the filename
corresponding to the date-time (monthdayyearhourminuteseconds.jpg,
essentially), then opens it for preview in gthumb.
I have the script at /usr/local/bin/screeny
I have another script to swiftly scp it to my remote host for display,
and another to upload it to imgur, if I prefer.

It took me a bit longer to understand. Well.. I copied your script and
put it into /usr/local/bin/screeny

The scrot can work great.

Just a little thing, I don't have rc.xml, seems,
$ locate rc.xml
/usr/share/mime/application/x-arc.xml
/usr/share/mime/application/x-sv4crc.xml
/usr/share/mime/text/x-adasrc.xml
/usr/share/mime/text/x-c++src.xml
/usr/share/mime/text/x-csrc.xml
/usr/share/mime/text/x-dsrc.xml
/usr/share/mime/text/x-objcsrc.xml
/usr/share/mime/text/x-svsrc.xml

You won't have one unless you use openbox or LXDE.
Somewhere in your XFCE prefs or configs there is a graphical program
that will allow you to add keybindings.
I do not recall where it is. I have played with XFCE, but have never
used it regularly.
It's handy to have such a script bound to a key.
Of course, you can always use scrot from the cli.
:~$ scrot -d (second of delay) filename.png
or something (delay to minimize terminal, or whatever).
Having it bound to a key is nice, because when watching a movie or
something, I can just smack the key and get a screengrab.
