Plus now XP runs better, snappier in the VM in Stretch than it did in
Wheezy. Same box. Not a lot, but enough to notice. Was somewhat
surprised with that. Wasn't a reinstall either. Just followed
VirtualBox's instructions to transfer virtual drive, etc. from Wheezy to
Stretch. No troubleshooting or tweaking needed.

You too? I also run XP in a VM, and file I/O is wonderfully fast. Even
though XP thinks it's working with NTFS, on the metal it's actually a
Linux file system (in my case ext4), and that gives it a performance edge.

Good to know there's been progress. Last time I researched this
option when installing Wheezy (5 years ago) on a multi-boot set up that
was all MBR, it was not recommended to mix-n-match. I had Windows XP as
one of the OSes, too.

That system is still alive and well though the hardware has been
upgraded numerous times, and only holds two OSes now -- Wheezy and
Stretch, it's still MBR It was juat easier to install Stretch that
way even though I chainload it off Wheezy's grub. (I prefer to keep OS
grubs separate.) Plus, I had no real need of the features that UEFI
offers. KISS -- Keep It Simple, Stupid.

FWIW: I run old XP in a VM now. Actually, it performs better than
running it natively.

Switches to what ? Kernel boot ?

 Does your system support UEFI?

Of course it does. Otherwise the Debian installer would not boot in
EFI mode.

You can't mix UEFI and MBR.  It's either one or the other.

Actually you can. The Debian installer can boot either in legacy BIOS
or native EFI mode. So does a Debian system when installed properly.

I doubt it that has anything to do with it. More than likely its not
loaded enough stuff to service his usb keyboard or mouse. Might have to
plug in a real ps2 keyboard to drive it at that point.

External PS/2 devices are becoming rare these days.
I have seen this kind of behaviour on a laptop which with integrated
PS/2 keyboard and touchpad. The PS/2 controller required an additional
kernel parameter in order to operate properly. Sorry, I can't remember
exactly which one, just it was i8042.something.

Is there another Fix for this other than PS/2,
Is there a particular system that will not have any problems installing
Deb 9.4 and work with USB or is there a mother board that will fix this
issue as well ?

Are there other OSes installed? Are they UEFI or MBR types? Does
your system support UEFI? You can't mix UEFI and MBR. It's either one
or the other.
