Hi Mark,

apt-cache show should show you the answer. I don't have access to a woody
system right now, but according to packages.debian.org, the one without the
version number is actually version 0.9+0beta12-3.

I did "apt-cache search alsa-source" and got

alsa-source
alsa-source-0.4
alsa-source-0.5

Which is the latest, the one with no version number or 0.5

What is "alsa"?

Someone else told me that I had to move to a new kernel. I find that suspicious. I
was
told the same thing when I couldn't get my nic working and it was wrong. Of course
the
result of trying it was a nightmare and I had do to a complete reinstall.

I don't want to find myself in that situation again.

the alsa modules for via82xx changed sometime around 0.9.1, I think.
You most likely need to upgrade to the newest alsa-source using the
various alsa packages, and roll the new kernel modules according to
the instructions in /usr/share/doc/alsa-source. It's slightly
intimidating but pretty easy if you follow the instructions.

Maybe the kernel is too old and doesn't support your card properly. Try
to upgrade to a newer one, e.g. 2.4.25. You can get precompiled
packages from . Install the proper package
and configure your bootloader to use the initrd.

Really, I still don't have sound

2004-03-15 Thread Mark Healey
I still haven't managed to get sound up and running. It looks like
everybody is stumped but I'm resubmitting the problem and including
all that I gathered in the last attempt to get it working.

I installed woody stable kernel 2.4.18-bf2.4

When I boot knoppix it uses via82cxxx_audio and works. I have that
module installed so I added the line to my "via82cxxx_audio" to my
/etc/modules.

The sound problem exists in root. What is worse is that when I have
sound enabled and open the Gnome Control Center opened to the
multimedia/sound window it won't close and the desktop stops
responding to anything.

lsmod output:

Module Size Used byTainted: P
via82cxxx_audio18144 1

I used aumix to max the volume.

I tried the acpi=off and pci=aoacpi boot parameters and the problem persists.
