You didn't mention what version of gpm/screen your using or which version of Debian, so here's all I can offer I am writing this in a screen session ssh'ed to another box. Both running testing and gpm version 1.19.6-25. I use the mouse to copy to/from 5 different boxes using screen. If memory serves me when I was reading the various archived mailing lists the screen people seemed to blame it on GPM and the GPM people did not seem too bothered. I'm no expert but I would suggest reading the man page for the 'patch' command as a start. As far as I can see yo 'cd to the directory containing the code you want to patch and run something along the lines of patch /path/to/file I did notice there was a dry run option.
