Screen refresh

2015-01-12 Thread Diogene Laerce
Hi,

I have an annoying refreshing/redrawing issue with my monitor screen LG Flatron
L222WS
on my Wheezy (Nvidia GT 640 with last proprietary driver installed).

The screen, pretty much all the time, does not refresh the image (does not
redraw it) :
the screen stays idle for example when I change tabs in iceweasel, I have to
resize,
minimize and maximize the window to effectively see the screen to update the
image.

And that happens in every softwares installed as long as they have graphical
interface,
of course. :)

Did anyone have the same issue or figure what could be the cause of that issue ?

Thank you,

I searched the refresh rate for my monitor and it tells me the max
resolution and refresh rate is 1028*1024 I really do not understand
how to convert this into Xserver config.

Below is my xserverconfig file but my monitor is using 1028*768 as
resolution and some bad refresh rate which hurts my eyes.

Can any of you help me please?

Find out the actual refresh rates and plug them into
XF86Config-4. You can probably find this information in your
user manual for the device, or you can check the
manufacturer's or vendor's web site.

If you are in X, use Synaptic to reconfigure your X server:
   Select the package xserver-xfree86
   Package -> Configure
   Follow the Debconf screens

If you are using a console or terminal window, as root
   # dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
   Follow the Debconf screens

The best bet is to boot a live Knoppix or similar CD, then look at the
video settings in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

FWIW, i can confirm xvidtune still works. :-) I used it to output a
ModeLine on RHL9, and then added that ModeLine to the Monitor section of
/etc/X11/XF86Config. Where do i go to contribute this so others might
benefit?

It doesn't offer 1400x1050. It works fine in 1280x1024, but after
having more real estate, i don't like going back to lower resolutions. ;-)

Yes - it's been a long time since i've had to use that! ;-)

One other thought I had, is there any difference in the xserver
you are using? Same one? Same version?

I'm pretty sure they're the same major & minor versions (XFree86 4.3),
but i'd imagine that sarge's is more recent. I'm using the NVIDIA
proprietary driver in both cases, but again, sarge's is probably more
recent.
I have to reboot into my RH drives tonight to copy the last of my data,
so i'll try to get some more information while i'm there and see what i
can come up with.

What does Knoppix do on this hardware?

Yes, my keyboard controller is on the way out on this machine. It takes me a
long while to correct mistakes.

That doesn't matter in this instance.

Possibly not. Have a look at using 'xidtune' to fine-tune your settings a
little. Then you can click on 'show' and in the xterm you ran it from, is
outputted a ModeLine. Add that under the 'Section "Monitor"' part of
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 (ensuring that you comment out any other modelines that
might be present for the specified resolution), and restart X11.

Getting better screen refresh rate in X?

2004-08-25 Thread Paul Gear
Hi folks,

I've recently got sarge properly working on my system, and one issue
that remains is the screen refresh rate. Under Red Hat Linux 9, i was
able to get 1400 x 1050 @ 85 Hz out of my screen. Under sarge, i only
get 75 Hz.

Here is the definition from my /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 on both systems.

sarge:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "BMS:088b"
HorizSync 30-98
VertRefresh 50-160
Option "DPMS"
EndSection

RHL9:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
ModelName"19CF"
HorizSync30.0 - 98.0
VertRefresh 50.0 - 160.0
Option "dpms"
EndSection

As you can see, the definitions are the same in terms of specs. I'm
guessing there is a database of mode definitions somewhere and i need to
copy the relevant definition from my RHL9 database, but i can't for the
life of me find where it is. Any clues? Or am i barking up the wrong tree?

Thanks,
Paul

Metacity incomplete screen refresh on switching workspace

2002-10-31 Thread Jean-Marc V. Liotier
While dselecting my way to gnome2 in unstable, I decided to have a look
at metacity (2.4.1-1) since the gnome guys seem to recommend it. The
good thing it that it really does not pretend to do more than manage
windows (but I guess that's a matter of personal taste). The bad thing
is that when switching between workspaces, the new workspace is badly
refreshed : parts of the screen are correctly refreshed, but others are
not. See
http://userpage.fu-berlin.de/~jml/Metacity_workspace_switch_incomplete_refresh.png

A bit of clicking and scrolling around gets me a refresh, but it slows
me down quite a bit. Is it a bug with Metacity, of did I configure
something badly ?

At least it does not crash anymore...

Duh! That did it - my refresh rates are the best possible so I don't
need to mess with the modelines.

Thanks to the others for their suggestions.

I think you'd just define some modelines with faster pixel clocks.
Look up the monitor specs to see what the maximum refresh rate is.

It depends on your monitor, I guess; some of them have buttons that can
show you the current refresh rate.
If you want to set X to drive your monitor at your preferred refresh
rate, you can try this one: http://www.zaph.com/Modeline/ (or go to
Google, and enter "modelines calculator"). Ain't Internet great...?
BTW, make sure that your monitor could handle the refresh rates you'd
define.

xvidtune, I think the only way to manually set the refresh rate would
be to make your own modelines ??

not sure though.

Increasing screen refresh rate in X

2002-09-25 Thread Andy Saxena

Hi,

How would I increase the screen refresh rate in X? XF86Config-4 allows
one to set a range for horizontal and vertical sync rates. How can I
find out what the current refresh rates are?
