No, I can only guess at what's going on. The first few lines of
the document source are (wrapped arbitrarily):

HTMLHEADTITLESlashdot:News for Nerds. Stuff that Matters.
 /TITLE /HEAD
 BODY bgcolor=#00 text=#00 link=#00 vlink=#00
..

Those colours are a recipe for disaster, I'd say.

 Is that a reasonable guess?

Yes.

Setting a default of black text on a black background was stupid of
them.

The background should be white maybe you changed your prefs???

Gosh, I wish there were some (to get rid of jazzy backgrounds
that some people use. What would this preference be called in
Netscape 2.01?

No, I can only guess at what's going on. The first few lines of

 alt=Please click here. border=2
   width=468 height=60/a/center
 TABLE BORDER=0 CELLPADDING=0 CELLSPACING=0
TRTD WIDTH=1SCRIPT LANGUAGE=JAVASCRIPT

Those colours are a recipe for disaster, I'd say.

The remainder of the code contains things with other colours,
and presumably this patchwork of objects builds up into what you
all see. My browser perhaps can't match the level of sophistication
used at this site, so the missing colours just don't cover up all
the black.

Is that a reasonable guess?

Or am I on the wrong tack. I've been looking at slashdot with
lynx and notice that you can login. Is this a wise move, or
will I be inundated with junk mail? Are there preferences
which then become available?

Cheers,

Hi

I always use lynx for slashdot, and it works fine. I don't think I get
junk mail because of it, but it's hard to tell.

My usual workaround is (because I run netscrape with -install)
to move my mouse out of the ns window so that the ns colours change
to a fairly random combination of other colours. However, today
that random selection gives me, in place of dark grey on black,
light grey on green so I still can't read the text (and can
barely read the links). Any advice?

Well, try your prefs ;-)

Btw, I'm using Opera 3.6 under windoze (within 6 (?) months on Linux!).

Good luck,

Onno

If I remember correctly you can force browser to use your favourite
colorset and piss at page's settings by changing something in
preferences
