No problems. It is a USB hard disk drive. Buffalo Systems. Hi, When i connect my Maxtor OneTouch 500GB III EXT3 , dmesg says there is a new device connected: Apr 21 21:31:12 localhost kernel: usb 5-5: new high speed USB device using address 2 What happens then is a mistry for me: 1. When i run top: id = 100% load 2. System load goes up exactly to 2.0 2.0 2.0 3. No dev is given to the external harddisk 4. I have to reboot to see the external harddisk 5. cat /proc/usb/devices my terminal hangs 6. lsusb my terminal hangs This is not the way it should be. The disk is 100% ok and tested on a Ubuntu Laptop, and i have run fschk. Etch uses udev, which should work much better with newer hardware. Comparing a process on Ubuntu and a process on Sarge is not really fair because Ubuntu has much newer packages than Sarge does, even when it is fully updated. Could it be that there are some hardware problems with usb on your sarge system? I had some 'funny' problems with usb hard drives on one of my (older) computers and it turned out that those disappeared, when I connected the usb disk to another computer (different hardware, but same installation/configuration). USB harddisk not recognized after upgrade
Hello, I am running debian testing and I did a upgrade last week and after that my usb harddisk is nog recognized anymore. Last time it did work was november 10, so it has happend after that date. A older linux on a other partition still does recognize this usb drive, so it is not a hardware problem. But I want to use my new big disk also with debian testing because that is the distro I use daily. I don't know if that might help you, but I reinstalled hotplug (but it removed udev... ) and i got everything running like before... So maybe you should look into udev or/and hotplug... I don't really know what happened, but now everything works fine... last thing : I am running unstable, so maybe the pb is not quite the same... good luck!

What did happen and how do I sove it ? I had a similar problem couple of days ago after updating my Etch system. In my case, some modules were not more loaded automatically. Na mein Problem ist eine Unstimmigkeit zwischen der Kerneldoku und der tatsaechlichen Funktionsweise der Optionen mit mount. Ich bin mittlerweile schlauer und wundere mich immernoch, warum nicht alle FSe gleich gehandelt werden - ntfs hatte mal die utf8 Option so wie sie jetzt bei vfat existiert, ntfs hat mittlerweile aber eine nls Option bekommen Ausserdem habe ich etwas gegen RCX Kernel/Programme und so weiter, wenn ich die Wahl habe nehme ich lieber nur die vollendete Version. externe usb harddisk kann nicht gemountet werden - bitte um Hinweise
Hallo Liste Seit kurzem besitze ich eine externe usb harddisk. ich glaube, ich bin soweit, dass die harddisk reibungslos erkannt wird beim ein und ausstecken. Was mir aber nicht gelingen will, ist das teil zu mounten. ich würde die harddisk unter /dev/sda1 erwarten, da ich sonst keine anderen scsi geräte im einsatz habe. ein mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb/ führt zu mount: /dev/sda1 is not a valid block device gibt es hinweise, wo die externe harddisk zu finden ist? Siehe oben, syslog/dmesg/sg_map, ach ja und natuerlich sysfs (meistens und /sys gemountet). Es gibt zwar, soweit ich weiss, irgendeine Moeglichkeit, alle Prozesse zu killen, die in einem bestimmten Verzeichnis(-baum) sich befinden bzw. dort Dateien geoeffnet haben, jedoch bin ich halt an einer Loesung auf Modulebene interessiert. Dabei ist mir jedoch aufgefallen (schreibe ich am besten noch in einem anderen Thread), dass Zeilen wie pre-remove MODULNAME BEFEHL in /etc/modules.conf bei der Eingabe von rmmod irgendwie ignoriert werden, sonst koennte man ja auf diesem Wege irgendwie verhindern, dass die HCD-Treiber vor dem usb-storage-Treiber entfernt werden. jedoch noch eine Partition auf der Platte gemounted ist, gibt es jedoch Probleme, was vordergruendig ja ganz verstaendlich ist. Sie wird als /dev/sda eingebunden. Falls beim Aufruf von /etc/init.d/hotplug stop jedoch noch eine Partition auf der Platte gemounted ist, gibt es jedoch Probleme, was vordergruendig ja ganz verstaendlich ist. Hintergruendig jedoch liegt das ganze _nicht_ daran, dass hotplug einfach das Modul usb-storage entfernt und _deshalb_ der mount in der Luft haengt, sondern usb-storage wird nicht entfernt mit der vernuenftigen Meldung device busy (o.ae.). Das eigentliche Problem ist jedoch, dass der HCD-Treiber (also ehci-hcd bzw. als Fallback usb-ohci) sich problemlos mit rmmod entfernen laesst, was vom hotplug-Skript auch gemacht wird. Ist jedoch kein HCD-Treiber mehr da, haengt usb-storage und damit der mount irgendwie in der Luft und darum gibts read-errors oder Aehnliches beim Zugriff auf den Mount. Die Ursache fuer das Problem liegt meiner Ansicht nach darin, dass zwar usbcore von usb-storage und usb-storage wiederum vom Mount abhaengt sowie usbcore vom hcd-Treiber abhaengt, jedoch nicht der hcd-Treiber von usb-storage. Eine solche (wie auch immer geartete) Abhaengigkeit muesste aber bei mir bestehen, damit der HCD erst dann entfernt werden kann, wenn kein anderes Modul ihn mehr benoetigt; bei mir benoetigt ja usb-storage anscheinend das HCD-Modul. Bevor ich hier ueber meine bisherigen Loesungsansaetze berichte, die allesamt fehlschlugen, moechte ich erst mal wissen, wie Ihr so darueber denkt. Fuer hilfreiche Tipps waere ich sehr dankbar. I had a AJB6000 (Original 6GB player) which I recently upgraded to the 20 GB recorder. All of the AJBs except the 20 GB recorder use the ISD-200 interface which has its own special driver module. You should have CONFIG_USB_STORAGE_ISD200=y in your kernel config file. You will also need the general USB stuff. Your choice of OCHI vs UCHI modules will depend upon your chipset: ``lspci'', ``cat /proc/pci'' and ``cat /proc/bus/pci/devices'' may yield some clues as to which driver is appropriate. I have the following in my /etc/fstab (minus the linebreak): /dev/sda1 /mnt.dir/jukebox vfat \ defaults,user,gid=1005,fmask=664,dmask=775,noauto I find it easiest to maintain the directories on the AJB by setting up a mirror system under my home directory and using rsync to update the jukebox. As a side note, the 20 GB recorder is supported with the standard usb mass storage drivers, and has usb 2.0 support under 2.4.19-pre kernels. It will hang your USB stack if you plug it in without first turning it on, however. I just bought a 10Gig Archos MP3 player. Very nice so far. Plug it in to the USB, open explorer and start copying files over. Yeah windows. My home machine will be re-compiling with USB support very soon (aka as soon as copy done). The MP3 player shows out it's internal disk as a usb disk and works great. I have an IBM USB key, which AFAIK uses the same protocol as normal USB disks. You'll need USB support (obviously), OHCI support, and USB Mass Store support. You'll also need SCSI support and SCSI disk support, because the disk will claim to be a SCSI disk. Hmm. Looking at lsmod, I also seem to have the SCSI cdrom module loaded, but I don't think it's related to the USB key. I have pretty much all the USB drivers compiled as modules. It just takes a little longer to compile, doesn't slow down the kernel (since they won't be used if they're not needed), and if I, for some reason or other get some new hardware, I just plug it in, and it's there. When I plug in my USB key, it gets mapped to /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/*, which according to the devfs compatibility symlinks maps to /dev/sda*. I get partitions 1, 2, and 4 on my USB key. /dev/sda4 contains the data, which I can also get by mounting /dev/sda. I don't know what /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2 are.
